Job Description:
The primary responsibilities of this role, Director Medical Science Liaisons are to:
The National Director, Medical Science Liaisons, is accountable for providing leadership and management of the Regional Deputy Directors and Medical Science Liaisons. The National Director takes the lead in developing an effective Field Medical Affairs strategy that supports and augments the Medical Affairs and commercial business strategy. The National Director leads a therapeutic area core team and is responsible for prioritizing Field Medical Affairs resources, activities and deliverables. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring consistency of processes, standards of practice, tools and communication methods within the therapeutic area to ensure overall success in achievement of goals and objectives within Field Medical Affairs and the Business Unit.

Major tasks and responsibilities of position
Functional Management Responsibilities:
• Leads effort to recruit and hire Regional Deputy Directors and Medical Science Liaisons within the therapeutic area;
• Plans and manages functional therapeutic area budget comprising travel/entertainment, therapeutic area clinical program budget ;
• Manages the performance and development of Regional Deputy Directors and within therapeutic area;
• Responsible for developing, evaluating and delivering core training for Regional Deputy Directors and Medical Science Liaisons within therapeutic area;
• Accountable for the quality and consistency of scientific and medical knowledge of Regional Deputy Directors and Medical Science Liaisons within therapeutic area;
• Leads strategy and development of processes and capabilities that optimize the delivery of scientific services to internal stakeholders and external customers;
• Is a core member of the Field Medical Affairs Internal Management Team with responsibility for providing consistency within therapeutic area as it pertains to compliance of the field-based medical/scientific function;
• Provides coaching and feedback on job performance for Regional Deputy Directors and Medical Science Liaisons within therapeutic area.
Business Unit/Therapeutic Area Responsibilities:
• Accountable for the effective/optimal integration of Field Medical Affairs Therapeutic Area team within Medical Affairs and Business Unit;
• Prioritizes work and resources across the therapeutic area core team and manages field-based project responsibilities as they pertain to Field Medical Affairs;
• Effectively Partners with Cross-Functional Business Unit team members;
• Ensures internal stakeholders are knowledgeable of key opinion leader views and opinions as it pertains to Bayer Healthcare products and relative disease states;
• Responsible for identifying and resolving the therapeutic area operational needs/issues and processes of Field Medical Affairs and sharing best practices within the therapeutic area/business unit;
• Proactively coordinates field need for medical/scientific knowledge required for management and support of Bayer Healthcare products and relative disease states (in-line products and products in development);
• Ensures appropriate Field Medical Affairs staffing of therapeutic area/Business Unit initiatives such as: Consultants Meetings, Advisory Board Meetings, Medical Conventions, Regional/National Societies, etc.);
• Works closely with the therapeutic area National Sales Director to ensure optimal alignment of field resources in delivering therapeutic area goals and objectives;
• Accountable for Field Medical Affairs segment of Brand Planning Process to align and prioritize the scientific field-based Regional Deputy Directors and Medical Science Liaisons within therapeutic area;
• Ensures the development and execution of the Medical Affairs Brand Operational plans.
Additional Responsibilities:
• Attends appropriate scientific meetings to maintain his/her awareness of research activities within therapeutic area;
• Presents monthly updates to applicable cross-functional partners and therapeutic business reviews at Field Medical Affairs Internal Management Team Meetings as requested;
• In collaboration with Field Medical Affairs staff (Regional Deputy Directors and Medical Science Liaisons) establishes customer contact with opinion leaders related to key therapeutic area initiatives;
• Leads working with cross-functional Business Unit/Therapeutic area team members to develop effective brand-on-brand clinical strategies.

Required Qualifications

• Advanced degree in science-related field or other appropriate knowledge/experience (MD, PharmD, PhD) is strongly preferred, with 7 + years’ experience in the pharmaceutical industry in medical affairs, clinical development or equivalent;
• 5 years management experience in medical affairs, clinical development or equivalent;
• 5 years Medical Science Liaisons leadership experience;
• 5 years managing programs/projects in a team environment;
• Strong knowledge of clinical development/operations;
• Ability to manage a diverse group of responsibilities;
• Proven leadership abilities;
• Strong negotiation and strategic influencing skills;
• Highly developed written or verbal communication skills;
• Highly developed initiative ability;
• Excellent project management skills;
• Strong organization and time management skills;
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills;
• Proven ability to perform successfully under stringent timelines and with competing priorities;
• Ability to collaborate and mentor other leaders and managers within Medical Affairs/Scientific Affairs.
Preferred
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in a strategy-setting role within Medical Affairs;
• Excellent computer skills: Excel, Word, Power Point, Lotus Notes, etc.;
• Knowledge of information technology systems.

5. Value added to the success of the company - what are the main objectives of the function?
Within the therapeutic area, the National Director is responsible for:
• Deciding which issues require escalation to the VP, Head of MSLs and the VP of Medical Affairs, and generates alternatives, and recommends course of action
• Responsible for quality and consistency of scientific and medical knowledge exchange between MSLs and external and internal customers
• Leads strategy and development of processes and capabilities that optimize the delivery of services to internal and external customers
• Ensures compliance with FDA, OIG and Bayer Policies and Procedures
• Coordinates field need for medical/scientific knowledge required for scientific support of Bayer products (in-line products, products in development and in-licensed products)
• Strategically influences Therapeutic Area and Business Unit leadership relative to business unit strategy, goals and objectives and execution of field-based tactics
• Interactions frequently include those with VP level personnel and above

Work relations
Position requires the incumbent to function in a matrix environment and often with internal and external partners. Frequently has to move decisions and projects forward by way of excellent strategic influence and negotiation skills. The position requires a high degree of management and leadership experience across a matrix organization and within a department of therapeutic area field-based MSLs.
Position requires a strong working knowledge of the regulatory and compliance environment as it pertains to leading the therapeutic area field-based scientific team. The position must also ensure cross functional roles and departments support a compliant environment for therapeutic area field-based Regional Deputy Directors and MSLs to function effectively
