Job Description:
The Director, Communications will help shape and deliver the Mobile Hub’s communications strategy, which will serve several interrelated objectives. First, the Mobile Hub’s communications strategy will support delivery of its advocacy, knowledge building and collaboration objectives for priority audiences in the digital ecosystem, including emerging market governments, industry, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), bilateral donors, foundations, commercial investors and others. Second, the communications strategy will establish the Mobile Hub’s brand as a key thought leader within the digital development sector. Third, the communications strategy will link the Mobile Hub’s activities and accomplishments to the broader themes of its key stakeholders, including the UN Foundation, the United Nations and its own donors.
The Director, Communications will shape and ensure successful delivery of the communications strategy. S/he will refine and periodically refresh the overall Mobile Hub communications and brand strategies, ensuring coherence and harmonization across the entire program portfolio. S/he will offer expertise and delivery support to enable Mobile Hub colleagues to design and deliver communications strategies for their individual portfolios, including messaging and visual themes for promotion via publications, events, social and traditional media campaigns and other communications activities. S/he will monitor the digital development and industry landscape to identify opportunities and trends relevant for the Mobile Hub and its key audiences and stakeholders. S/he will play a lead role in designing a vision and supporting key Mobile Hub events, such as launch activities and Mobile Hub CEO and other executive-level participation at major global events.
In addition to working with the UN Foundation Communications team, the Director, Communications will work closely to harmonize and support the larger Mobile Team’s communications and advocacy efforts. S/he will work with the Programs and Investments team to support communications activities to engage and influence key audiences. S/he will work closely with the Insights for Action team, both to align on audiences, messages and channels for disseminating insights and to harmonize the insights dissemination channels and online assets with the overall Hub communications approach. The Director, Communications will work frequently with vendors and partners to ensure effective communications strategies for the Mobile Hub’s many collaborative efforts.
The Mobile Hub is a donor-funded program hosted within the UN Foundation, and based in the UN Foundation’s Washington, D.C. office. The incumbent will be an employee of the UN Foundation and in most cases, will be based in Washington. In cases where a non-U.S. location is agreed, candidates will be hired on a long-term contract basis. In any case, candidates must have prior work authorization.
The Director, Communications, Mobile Hub will report to the Vice President for Business Operations. S/he will be the senior member of a small team and may play a management and mentorship role. The Director will collaborate with external partners, as well as colleagues in the Strategy, Insights for Action and Programs and Investments teams, as well as the Mobile Hub’s country offices.
Refine the Mobile Hub’s draft communications strategy to reflect its updated strategy and best practice.
Translate the communications strategy into an annual communications plan, with updated, harmonized communications themes, messaging, events, media campaigns, publications schedules and other activities to realize the Mobile Hub’s strategic objectives.
Provide communications services to the Mobile Hub’s teams, including consulting on program-level communications strategies; hands-on support to design and deliver events, publications and other communications and advocacy activities; help sourcing vendors to support graphic design, copywriting and other communications services, etc.
Ensure a harmonized digital communications strategy across the Mobile Hub, including effective use of its website(s), social media and other online assets.
Periodically update the Mobile Hub’s communications landscape analysis to ensure the Mobile Hub communications strategy is responsive to trends and sufficiently distinctive to support its strategy.
Participate and contribute as needed to UN Foundation-wide communications efforts, particularly to ensure the Mobile Hub is appropriately reflected.
Perform periodic communications strategy reviews and propose strategic course corrections, in partnership with the Mobile Hub’s Strategy and Performance Management and Learning teams, as well as the executive team.
Ensure the communications strategy adheres to its implementation plan and budget.
Provide periodic reporting as required.
Demonstrated leadership creating and delivering excellent communications strategies in high-performing settings.
Outstanding written communications skills, with an ability to calibrate to meet the needs of diverse audiences.
Track record of driving the production of world-class communications assets, including publications, websites, events, etc.
Demonstrated client service orientation, with the ability to internalize internal and external audience needs and to translate these needs into high-quality communications strategies and assets.
Familiarity with how to leverage digital technologies for communications strategies.
Fluency with topics and stakeholders relevant to the Mobile Hub, such as digital industry and/or development, innovation, impact investing, etc.
Substantive professional experience in emerging markets.
Familiarity with the diverse needs of both the development community and industry.
Demonstrated experience delivering results through teams, partners, colleagues and consultants.
