Job Description
Primary Function
The Production Director is responsible for creating new opportunities to use educational and edu-tainment media to transform classrooms and communities in the developing world. The PD is responsible for development, production, and distribution processes of original and reversioned programing across all genres: education documentary, talk shows, scripted features, etc. This management includes creative and editorial but also all business aspects of our production initiatives including production management and budget management.
The PD is also expected to develop new programming initiatives and solutions in challenging, frontier markets in order to deepen DLA’s impact and expand reach. This includes distribution across all platforms: broadcast, digital and mobile. The PD simultaneously oversees multiple projects, partnerships, and vendors in Africa, Latin America, and potentially Asia.

Responsibilities

Direct creative, editorial, and financial and business aspects of DLA productions.
Manage media projects from inception to distribution to evaluation.
Unlock or create new distribution opportunities in remote areas of the developing world (from DVD, file-based, mobile, free-to-air broadcast).
Identify and manage the efforts of external producers and production companies to ensure timely, effective, development, production, and delivery of originals, reversions, and promos on time and on budget.
Manage an internal team of 2 (Associate Producer and Production Coordinator).
Negotiate deal points and develop contracts with finance team and external legal counsel.
Serve as team leader on productions reviewing, editing, approving (and when necessary participating) in the creation of treatments, production schedules, budgets, scripts, field shoots, rough cuts, final cuts, graphics and design elements, audio, music, and talent management.
Work with President to fundraise, produce and distribute a feature-length drama about tuberculosis in Africa - working with an African production company, corporate partners, and a broad coalition of NGOs.
Work with President to further develop, fundraise, and implement a major initiative to expand educational television across Africa.
Act as senior advisor on media trends and opportunities for educational media in the developing world.
Develop new programming ideas, secure funding, and execute potential commissions and co-productions with partners (NGOs, governments, and other funders).
Solicit programming ideas from around the world to develop programming with global appeal and local relevance to developing world contexts.
Develop strong relationships with external partner organizations, vendors, and DLA staff.
Develop and manage annual production budget and be responsible for the business, financial, and legal (intellectual property) management of overall production machine and each individual production.
Oversee language customization.

Requirements

A minimum of 10 years of experience as senior producer of factual programming for international audiences, preferably in the developing world.
A proven track record in creative execution (turning ideas into high-quality programming), editorial judgment, and successful leadership in an international/cross-cultural context.
Proven project management successes.
Ability to manage outside producers, build credibility and strong working relationships with internal and external partners and generate a shared commitment to common goals.
Demonstrated budget management ability.
Demonstrated hands-on experience and knowledge in all aspects of production and producing in and for developing countries.
Experience overseeing multiple producers and projects simultaneously while managing the creative process from concept to final delivery.
The ability to bring international production contacts to the position.
Excellent judgment, decision-making, diplomacy, and problem solving especially in multi-national/multi-cultural contexts.
Experience in international development including time living and working in the developing world.
Superior verbal and written communication with partners and colleagues at all levels.
Proven success and leadership working under tight deadlines with international teams.
Proven ability to build partnerships with a wide variety of entities.
Exceptional interpersonal skills, ability to develop, motivate, and lead a team.
Position may require 15% travel often to remote, physically demanding locations in Africa and elsewhere.
Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of skills, training and hands-on experience.
Must have legal right to work in the United States.
