Director - Consumer Data Management - ESPN - Bristol


Job description
The Director of Consumer Data Management will manage a team of technical product managers and business analysts within the ESPN Technology Department to construct and support ESPN’s First Party, Analytical and Personalization Data infrastructures. The internet-scale platforms that you build will be core assets in the delivering the highest quality personalized sports content to over 100M fans monthly. This is an opportunity to fundamentally evolve the ESPN delivers content, thinks about personalization and monetizes our audiences.


The individual in this role will be required to demonstrate sound cross-functional leadership, playing a vital role in the creation of ESPN’s Consumer Data Management Program. This role is a key leadership role leading the definition, vision, strategy and principals around ESPN’s consumer data and analytical platforms. He or she will think strategically when defining standards for naming, describing, governing, managing and delivering all consumer data within the ESPN enterprise.

This role will partner with the Consumer Data Platforms Data Science and Engineering team and provide technical product leadership as it applies to the creation and delivery of algorithms, toolsets and workflows to enhance our products and business.

This role requires close collaboration and will serve as the liaison with ESPN’s Digital Product, Ad Sales, Marketing, Analytics and Affiliate Sales team and the ideal candidate will have experience in how consumer data is collected and consumed by these teams and the implications on ESPN’s consumer data strategy.

The ideal candidate will have 5 or more years experience with relevant technologies and with managing, designing, implementing, and supporting a variety of user data systems and tools. The candidate should have a BS or BA, or advanced degree in computer science, engineering or in a related field or relevant work experience. The right candidate must be a self-motivated, team player who can contribute to the overall business objectives of the organization. This person must be able to work closely with other internal and external product and technology experts.

Responsibilities
Thought leader for Consumer Data usage and consumption at ESPN
Leads the work in partnership with product management around the creation of ESPN’s future state personalization products
Define the data frameworks (ingestion, processing, distribution, access) for core consumer data platforms.
Prioritize the Consumer Data Platforms road map against business requirements and digital product timelines and projects.
Experience with creating and using data models
Lead the definition of ESPN’s consumer data taxonomy and ontology.
Define and implement data quality and data governance processes, workflows and standards.
Provide Technical product management in the creation of an eco-system of tools, applications and processes to support the democratization on ESPN’s consumer data across business units.
Provides transparency and recommendations on project trade-offs and provides dependency coordination.
Performs with a wide degree of latitude on creative solutions.
Continually assesses and integrates internal and external customer feedback and business metrics.
Stays on top of market trends to determine new or enhanced product capabilities that positively impact our overall fan experience.

Basic Qualifications
Passionate sports fan with a degree in Computer Science, or related technical field or equivalent work experience
Must have both strong technical and business communication skills
A minimum of 10 years of work experience in a data oriented role in a consumer oriented media or software development company
At least 5 years of management experience

Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with, analyzing or building consumer data frameworks, systems or tools.
Familiarity with distributed computing platforms, engines and tools like Hadoop, map reduce, Hbase, etc.
Demonstrated data driven decision-making capabilities. Strong analytical skills using tools like tableau, Localytics, Omniture, Conviva, Google Analytics or related products with applicable experience in using analytics to influence decisions
Experience with technical product management
Strong project management skillsets
Strong communication and presentation skills
Understanding of the technical architecture of complex data frameworks
Experience taking direction and input from multiple sources and creating a shared product vision
Demonstrated ability to work on a diverse scope of projects requiring detailed analysis, creative/practical problem solving, and sound judgment.
Familiarity with ad networks, DSP’s, DMP’s and/or advertising platforms.

Required Education
BA/BS in computer science, engineering, or related technical field
