Director - Patent Counsel - Juniper Networks - Sunnyvale

About the Position:
As a director of patents, this person will assist in strategically managing the company’s intellectual property portfolio worldwide, advise the company on intellectual property issues, including the global development and protection of the company’s intellectual property portfolio, and manage the patent program, including current and future projects.
The person in this position will collaborate closely with engineers, senior business executives and other attorneys to ensure that the company’s most promising inventions are identified and patented, manage the domestic and foreign filing and prosecution of patent applications and work closely with inside and outside counsel on a variety of other IP matters. This is a highly visible role working with business clients and engineers. This is the ideal position for someone with strong communication, relationship-building and analytical skills. Key Responsibilities:
Manage the patent portfolio of several business units, including managing outside counsel, working with patent committees and the engineering community worldwide to ensure protection of intellectual property.
Responsible for developing the overall strategy for the patent program, including a short term and long term plan for process improvements, and budget management.
Action oriented, to drive towards continued improvement, and completion of key initiatives.
Analyze patents and the coverage on various technologies, including determination of value.
Conducts legal projects independently where appropriate, but is a team-oriented person able to work well in a group to achieve goals and complete larger projects
Acts as an organizational leader in patents, and combines a knowledge of one or more legal specialties with sound business acumen and knowledge of the business goals and objectives; is a valued member of the business team and provides useful legal advice and alternative solutions; identifies and drives development of legal strategies for business; manages client expectations to balance requirements and competing priorities; provides useful legal advice and alternative solutions.
Has a significant impact on the organization's goals and influence in colleagues' actions to mitigate risks; understands the business context in which the colleague operates with complete consideration of the Company objectives; identifies and drives development of legal strategies for business.
May train and supervise attorneys, paralegals and outside counsel; may be involved in hiring, developing and retaining talent within the Law Department.
Ensures efficient and timely communication with coworkers, clients, and team members; demonstrates recognized leadership and values of the company.
Qualifications:
J.D. Degree and license to practice Law in at least one recognized jurisdiction within the United States.
Technical degree - EE, CS, Physics preferred. Others considered with experience.
Admitted to practice patent law before the USPTO.
12+ years experience in patent prosecution and IP.
In-house experience preferred.
Other Information:
Relocation is not available for this position
Travel requirements for the position is minimal, but will require some travel, including international travel to India and China. (Approximately 5-10% travel.)
