Job description
ComiXology is seeking a Director of Business Intelligence to join its team in New York City. ComiXology is the leading source of comic books in digital form, and was recently acquired by Amazon. Amazon considers comiXology to be a key growth opportunity in the digital comics space.
The mission of the comiXology Business Intelligence team is to give internal and external stakeholders the information and insights they need to make the best possible decisions.
Our BI team supports the data needs of diverse functional groups at comiXology and at other Amazon business units involved in the marketing and sale of digital comics worldwide. We also provide data and analysis to important third-party partners, such as publishers who provide content to us. Our proprietary data and analysis are important value-added elements of our partners’ relationship with us.
As Director of Business Intelligence, you will work closely with marketing, merchandising, accounting, finance, business development, account management, technology, and digital production teams, providing them with data and insights, helping each the audience to understand the key takeaways and potential for specific action based on the data. As you monitor our key performance metrics, you will give our executives real time updates as needed on emerging trends, opportunities, and risks, together with recommendations for action. You will be a key advisor to our Leadership team and managers of our functional teams.
You will guide the Company’s data gathering and reporting strategy. You will be responsible for both front end and back end elements. Your front end responsibilities will include reports, dashboards, and analysis, both recurring and ad hoc. Your back end responsibilities will include the sources and structure of our data, including our data warehouse and ETL scripts. You will supervise a BI Analyst who will assist in reporting as well as maintaining scripts and dashboards.
This key role reports to our SVP-Business Development and Operations, and works closely with our CEO and senior executives at other Amazon business units.
What You’ll Do
Monitor, and advise management on, performance against KPIs, emerging trends, opportunities, and risks. Your work will be informed by a deep understanding of the Company’s business and the metrics that reflect the Company’s performance and you will contribute to, and where appropriate drive the conceptualization of KPIs.
Drive the ongoing development and operations of BI tools, including standard and ad hoc reports and self-service tools stakeholders can use to generate their own reports. You will work with stakeholders to identify their standard and ad hoc reporting needs and develop an understanding of the areas in which rapid responses are needed and for which appropriate reporting tools must be developed. You will ensure timely responses to time-sensitive reporting requests.
Manage the data warehouse, including optimizing its design, ensuring data integrity, archiving data, and incorporating new sources of data.
Clearly and concisely articulate insights and recommendations to the relevant decision makers through written and oral reports and presentations.
Support cross-functional teams on day-to-day execution of projects.
Interface as needed with external partners, such as publishers.
Basic Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, business, or related field.
· Strong conceptual knowledge of DW and BI systems and processes, including ETL methodology.
· At least 5 (preferably 7-10) years’ experience building and maintaining databases.
· At least 5 (preferably 7-10) years’ SQL experience, including 2-3 years of MySQL.
· At least 3-5 years experience managing a BI frontend tool and building reports and visualizations.
· Strong comfort level working in the Linux shell and on Windows Server 2008+.
· Advanced Excel skills.
· Ability to think strategically and creatively.
· Strong planning, analytical, and problem solving skills.
· Strong leadership skills.
· Ability to work independently or with teams as the situation requires.
· Ability to work on multiple initiatives simultaneously.
· Meticulous attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
· Masters degree in relevant discipline.
· At least 2-3 years’ experience with Postgresql and Oracle PL/SQL.
· At least 2-3 years’ experience with Tableau reporting system.
· Coding experience, especially the ability to maintain existing BASH and Python scripts and to generate new scripts (in Python, Perl, or similar), for automating reporting and ETL functions.
· Familiarity with advanced data mining techniques, particularly association rule learning, classification, and regression.
· Experience analyzing customer behavior.
· Knowledge of data visualization best practices.
· Experience with VBA/Excel macros.
· Experience with AWS including Amazon Redshift.
· Experience in e-commerce, retail, digital media, customer experience, and/or marketing.
· Management experience.
· Ability to deal with ambiguity.
