Director - Development - National Geographic Channels - Columbia


Job description
The Director of Development will generate entertaining non-fiction, character-driven series, Specials and mini-series either through internal development, or by developing pitches from agencies or production companies from around the world. The Director will also work with outside agencies and production companies to scout and hire on-air talent for the network, and the Director will foster relationships with elite show runners and other key industry creative to ensure the Channel hears the best ideas and works with the most talented people in the business.

Responsibilities
Major contributor to internal program development with content team and programming department. Conducts brainstorming meetings and generates new show ideas which lead to more requests for proposals.

Generates persuasive written and visual materials to help "sell" ideas internally. Figures out best outside producers to tackle internally generated ideas.
Speaks with producers and agents to develop, evaluate and recommend existing entertainment based, character driven, non-fiction programming that will increase ratings performance, build awareness and support the National Geographic brand.
Works with agents, talent executives and production companies to cast host and expert talent for over 400 hours of programming per year.
Participates in conventions and on panels at events such as MIPCOM, MIPTV, RealScreen, NATPE and History and Science Congress to represent our needs to the production community while looking for up and coming talent.
Develops ideas for new series and specials.
Pitches new ideas to Senior Executive team for greenlight.
Passes on programming that does not fit network vision.
Screens and casts talent for shows in development and production.

Qualifications

B.A. or B.S. Minimum of three to five years specific experience working in program development or production for a network or production company.
Extensive knowledge of NY and LA agency community and production companies.
Must watch a lot of TV and be fluent in trends and forecasts of television landscape.
Strong track record of generating original programming ideas. Experience with scripted programming a plus.
Broad knowledge of studio, multi-camera remote and single camera field production and post production is essential. Experience in a wide variety of program genres.
Must be able to create written and visual support materials to help "sell" internally generated ideas internally.
Must have experience in and ability to give and take pitches and present shows to full Channel as new programming is rolled out.
Ability to conceive of and pitch original ideas is essential.
Ability to manage multiple projects, leadership skills, and strong analytical skills.
Proficient in Final Cut Pro, Illustrator and Photoshop preferred.
