Director - Surgical Services - Indiana University Health - Lafayette


Job description
The Director of Surgical Services provides leadership for Surgical Services business and operational functions with an emphasis on patient/family centered care, quality, provision of a safe environment and delivery of an optimal patient experience. Responsibilities include the efficient and purposeful integration of surgical services within the Indiana University Health Arnett system including the ASC and the Hospital. Has 24-hour accountability for Surgical Services and the delivery of care.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
All employees will be held accountable to the IU Health Arnett Standard of Service that is defined by Service Excellence

Leadership:
Supports and models organization values and philosophy. Accountable for strategic planning, program development, labor management and overall operational administration of Surgical Services.
Ensures that an annual plan, inclusive of objectives and resource allocations, is developed. The plan will include methods and strategies designed to improve operations, minimize operating costs and effect efficient utilization of labor and equipment. Works collaboratively with Medical Staff, Surgical Services Medical Director and Anesthesia Medical Director.

Standards of Care:
Incorporates current evidence based practice standards in the development of departmental standards of care and policy/procedures for areas of responsibility.

Human Resources:
Provides effective leadership for assigned team members and ensures an equitable and consistent application of organizational policies, procedures and values. Maintains a continuous feedback process to foster individual team member development. Promotes an environment consistent with Sanctuary of Healing. Focuses on retention as well as, recruitment of competent team members to ensure the safe delivery of patient care.

Accreditation:
Ensures compliance with all applicable quality and accreditation standards for assigned areas of accountability.

Financial Management:
Provides for effective monitoring and financial management of assigned areas. Seeks and recommends potential opportunities for cost containment, and analyzes variances from budget plan or anticipated trends.

Continuous Quality Improvement:
Assumes a leadership role in quality improvement activities. Participates in the development of organization quality improvement initiatives and collects/submits required data for the quality monitoring system in a timely manner. Obtains and reviews outcome and benchmarking data for opportunities for improvement and develops quality indicators for area of responsibility in collaboration with the Medical Director and the Director of Quality Improvement. Promotes and supports the participation of team members in quality initiatives.
Patient Experience:
Monitors patient satisfaction data and patient family feedback and develop appropriate response. Actively participates in customer service culture activities and is a champion for customer service initiatives.

Safety:
The Director promotes a Culture of Safety by participating in the development, monitoring and sustainment of a safe, highly reliable and functional environment. Expected behaviors include open communication, consistent work habits, and compliance with identified departmental safety measures.

Collaboration/Communication:
Role models exemplary team skills; mediates inter and intra-disciplinary conflict. Ensures services are coordinated with other department services and corporate plans. As part of the overall corporate strategy, the employee is responsible for maintaining a communication system that interfaces with the medical staff and others to ensure total quality patient care. Identifies key stakeholders, facilitates the development of highly functional teams to support clinical areas. Collaborates with other leaders within the system, state, and nation to improve service and maintain an environment that in alignment with excellence goals.

Clinical Program Administration:
Ensures that all patient care areas within the defined clinical programs produce the necessary patient services as required by the level of acuity and patient mix. Provides for clinical or service direction to other managers or directors. Provides leadership in all facets of surgical services patient care and is accountable for the initiation and completion of business and unit plans that ensure quality while utilizing available resources efficiently. Responsible for ensuring that patient care needs are met by consistently maintaining a high reliability operation with established best practices based on regulatory requirements and recommendations. Maintains accountability for a quality program within department and reports outcomes. The employee is accountable for strategic planning to achieve clinical, financial, service, and people excellence standards.

Desired Skills and Experience
BSN degree preferred with current nursing license in the state of Indiana required, MSN preferred, but not required.
3-5 years of clinical experience in surgical nursing care preferred.
Current BLS certification required.
Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills, Surgical Services Management experience preferred.
Knowledge of state and national regulatory agency guidelines.
Familiarity with health care reimbursement environment.
Ability to lead quality improvement initiatives.
Ability to plan and manage the utilization of resources.
Ability to facilitate and lead work groups.
