Director - Investment Advisory Product Development - TIAA-CREF - Charlotte
Job Description
The Investment Management Group within TIAA-CREF Trust Company is seeking an innovative investment professional to help drive investment advisory product development for a business unit serving mass affluent and high-net-worth clients as well as small-to-mid sized Endowments and Foundations. This will be a development role working closely with the Managing Director of Investment Strategy and Product Development. The individual in this role with also work closely with the Investment Strategy team members, Individual and Institutional Trust Portfolio Managers, the trust company investment leadership team (equity, fixed income, and the CIO), and Advice and Planning services leadership. The role will also have a cross organizational scope in development initiatives that will include engaging with the leadership of partner business units, including the distribution organization, information technology, operations, marketing, legal and compliance. Primary responsibilities for the candidate selected will include supporting ongoing design and development of the core investment advisory offerings and related platforms, including portfolio accounting systems, UMA/UMH model management, rebalancing systems, trade implementation, proposal systems, compliance and oversight processes, and integration/coordination with financial planning applications.
Examples of initiatives the candidate would be responsible for supporting include implementation of dynamic asset allocation offerings, integration of annuities within investment advisory programs, and implementation of retirement income strategies. The candidate should be experienced with all aspects of investment advisory program management, including strategic asset allocation, capital market assumptions, and manager selection. The candidate should have demonstrated experience with financial planning concepts, such as goal-based financial modeling, Monte Carlo simulations, and retirement income/decumulation planning. Responsibilities:
• Product Development – contribute to evaluation, design, and implementation of client-centric investment advisory solutions
o Develop both functional and analytical understanding of client needs and goals
o Develop and maintain perspectives on competitive marketplace
o Research and design investment solutions that leverage multiple investment vehicles, including mutual fund, ETFs, structured products, separately managed strategies, and insurance products
o Partner with key support areas to drive implementation of solutions from business requirements through technical implementation and marketing support
• Asset Allocation – contribute as a member of a team focused upon asset allocation policy, goals-based portfolio construction, and supporting analyses, including:
o Developing and testing utility functions related to goal-based investment activities,
o Integrating portfolio design and implementation with advice and planning applications,
• Develop, present, and defend recommendations before various governance and oversight committees.
• Support an environment of effective feedback and monitoring of investment results to drive continuous improvement in decision making processes.
• Collaborate with broader investment research team to help refine investment process, product selection, quantitative tools and methods.
• Handle portfolio/client issues as they arise: identify the problem, propose solutions, and work with client and other company staff, as needed, to resolve; develop client communications.
• Contribute to the investment product due diligence process supporting the overall investment framework by participating in policy discussions, investment committee discussions, and general team discussions.
• Maintain an active awareness of the markets and of asset class issues and valuations and incorporate into portfolio recommendations.
Required Qualifications:
• B.A. or B.S. Required
• Eight or more years of investment product development/management experience in retail/wealth management context
• Demonstrated experience in managing complex investment product development initiatives
Desired Qualifications:
• CFA or similar advanced studies in investment disciplines
• Extensive knowledge of a range of investment products, including mutual funds, ETFs, CITs, separately managed accounts, fixed and variable insurance products, and alternative investment strategies.
• Ability to partner with multi-disciplinary teams to develop clear, complete and effective business and functional requirements
• Strong analytical and quantitative skills
• Cogent, effective writing, communication and presentation skills
• Strong background in investment strategy, asset allocation and portfolio construction.
• Flexibility to accommodate moderate travel requirements
• Demonstrated ability to develop creative, effective solutions to complex financial problems
• Works well on a team and independently on short and long-term projects and knows how to prioritize
• Willingness and ability to thrive in a hands-on, rapid growth investment environment
• Strong consultative skills: ability to present complex investment concepts in intuitive terms both orally and in writing
