Technical Director - Storage - Data Center - NetApp - Sunnyvale


Job description
Job Summary:
As the Technical Director for Database Technology you provide strong technical leadership to drive innovation in NetApp's products and solutions that target database-oriented workloads.
Your deep understanding of technology, customer and IT trends impacting database architecture and deployments is essential to inform NetApp's product strategy as some of the most profound changes in database architectures materialize through the end of the decade. Your deep understanding of customer requirements and the I/O profiles that databases generate grounds your understanding of the long term trends with the pragmatic business realities of today's changing market.
You will leverage your deep understanding of the principles of database design and implementation to become the go-to expert within NetApp engineering for how to optimize our products to deliver best of bread storage and data management capabilities that are straightforward for our customers to consume as part of their database deployments.

Essential Functions:
- Be the lead product architect representing NetApp Engineering to all of our major Database Partners in joint development projects and strategic product integration activities.
- Provide future technical vision to the Datacenter Solutions Group for database-oriented workloads.
- Translate customer and partner requirements into architecture requirements for NetApp products to deliver the best of class solutions for the current and emerging database technologies

- Work cross NetApp to influence product teams to deliver solutions for the database workloads
- Work with customers to understand requirements for database, suggest appropriate NetApp solutions based on their needs
- Provide product architecture insight and guidance to the Database Technical Marketing and Reference Architecture team.

Desired Skills and Experience
Requirements:
- Recognized expert in software design and development, with a specific understanding of the implementation of both disk-based and in memory database technologies.
- Must be familiar with multiple traditional and emerging database technologies for structured, and semi-structured data, e.g. Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, SAP, DB2, MongoDB, Cassandra, hBase.
- Must be comfortable engaging in the solution engineering activities required to take a set of products and combine them together with a "Reference Architecture" blueprint to ensure high quality repeatable, scalable customer outcomes.
- Prior storage architecture experience is a plus, but not required.

Responsibility:

- This individual will apply many years of expertise or unique technical/industry knowledge in solving problems that are unique and extremely complex given time, budget and resource constraints.
- Demonstrate leadership and vision in determining and driving strategy decisions, process changes, business initiatives, etc.

Interaction:
- This individual must work effectively with staff to executive levels employees within the function, across functions and outside of the organization.
- This individual is a recognized expert and exercises wide latitude in determining own objectives and approaches to critical assignments.
- Is seen as a leader, or "guru" by others in the function and organization.

Education & Experience:
- A minimum of 15+ years of experience is required.
- A Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, a Master Degree, or a PhD; or equivalent experience is required.
- Demonstrated ability to have completed multiple, extremely complex technical projects.
