Director - Product Development and Engineering - MedAmerica - Emeryville
Job description
Job Profile:
Product Development & Engineering will lead the development and implementation of our organization’s products, technical innovations and solutions in an Agile product development environment. This role defines product strategy and offerings through a deep understanding of the market needs and trends. The PDE team analyzes customer behaviors, technology trends, sales behaviors, support issues, competitive analyses, product usage patterns, and more to guide the organization in future product planning as well as current-day product operations, vendor and partner collaboration, and engineering execution.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Drive strategy and execution for all aspects of product development and delivery
Direct product planning and execution throughout the product lifecycle including: Development of a product roadmap that flows from an understanding of user needs, competitive landscape, market research, and creative thinking. Create product specifications, manage and prioritize Agile roadmaps and teams. Strive for agility, but build with practicality, reusability, and scalability in mind
Develop deep "end customer" understanding, particularly around unmet user experience needs
Drive delivery of new product features through product engineering and manage feature development lifecycle
Identify feature gaps with products and provide voice-of-the-customer inputs and prioritization to our development roadmap for addressing feature gaps
Create and prioritize the projects within engineering, assisting in determining the best technical implementation methods, track product development, and develop product launch plans
Understand and stay current with the dynamic competitive landscape around healthcare service delivery, including emerging technologies and platforms
Become an internal and external champion, evangelist, and expert on a wide array of healthcare service and operations capabilities
Take creative risks to develop breakthrough opportunities
Direct cross-functional development, marketing and support teams to drive usability and adoption
Present products to internal customers and partners
Ensure consistency of the core positioning and messaging for all products and systems
Work with the Product team to set goals which you'll lead to delivery dates
Work with the Engineering team to manage and evolve the development process and release schedule, assess the diverse set of existing platforms, and look at improving, rationalizing, and globalizing the tech stack to achieve innovation, scale and growth
Direct metrics reporting/analytics programs to quickly gauge user response and understand user behavior.
Be an expert with respect to the competition
Support product operations’ tight feedback loop with organizational consumers to understand customer/prospect needs relative to functionality and positioning, and collaboration to fine-tune positioning and offers to help optimize delivery cycles
Think end-to-end by connecting all the pieces of the business (development, marketing, support) to make the offering successful in the market while leveraging all available assets (customers, internal and external data, related offerings, partners) to solve customer problems and create value
Identify and track key success metrics (e.g., adoption, usage and customer satisfaction) for each offering and utilizing each offering’s metrics to make informed decisions
Desired Skills and Experience
Our Ideal Candidate Profile:
BA/BS in Computer Science or equivalent; MBA desired but not required
8+ years of Product Management experience:
Demonstrated success in delivering products/services in a growing environment
Technical fluency; comfort with and understanding of architectural concepts
Previous experience interacting with and presenting to executives coupled with ability to communicate complex ideas in an effective manner, and to tailor positioning messages to technical and non-technical audiences
Experience in healthcare business a plus
Domain expertise in healthcare products helpful but not required
Excellent user experience knowledge; demonstrated success in creating innovative and user-friendly web-based software applications and user-facing features
Experience working with customers and prospects in a product, consulting or professional services capacity a plus
Entrepreneurial mindset, bias for action and a passion for delivering great customer experiences
Analytical orientation and possess strong problem-solving skills, demonstrated by the ability to structure an issue and analyze alternative solutions. The knowledge of an array of analytical methods, and the ability to deploy the appropriate approach in a timely manner, is critical
Possesses well-developed business judgment, which permits the creation of meaningful insight from potentially disparate findings. The ability to think creatively about solutions is a key success factor in the role

10+ years of product management experience, preferably for consumer-facing products in an e-commerce or consumer-focused company
10+ years of experience ideally with scaled technologies such as Apache, NGINX, Grails, Spring, MySQL, Mongo, AWS
Experience building RESTful web services, mobile apps and consumer facing software
Hands-on manager who wants to roll up his/her sleeves and tirelessly focus on both the big picture as well as the details and nuances of product design and customer experience
Has broad exposure to a variety of user experience disciplines, including: interaction design, usability engineering, research/analytics, and visual design
Ability to translate technology features into business benefits
Experience in Agile development methodology such as Scrum and Agile development tools such as Pivotal Tracker, Rallydev or Jira
Demonstrated passion for ownership through a track record of successfully achieving results
Ability to grasp complexity coupled with a passion to simplify
Positive, optimistic attitude, high degree of intrinsic motivation and ability to operate with high energy and flexibility.
