Director - IT Strategy - Amtrak - Washington


Job description
The Director IT Strategy is responsible for leading IT Business Strategy efforts, including the developing and
executing the IT strategic plan in alignment with the Amtrak corporate strategy as well as all of the Technology
Strategy components. This position works under the direction of the Chief Business Strategy Officer.
The Director IT Strategy is responsible for translating strategies into actionable plans to support business needs
and leading strategic review meetings.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
•Facilitating the creation of the IT strategy, based on the vision, direction, and priorities provided by the Chief
Strategy Officer
•Partnering with IT Chief Relationship Office to identify key strategic business objectives and priorities
•Aligning IT leadership objectives to the IT strategy, defining IT metrics, and communicating change management
plans

•Conducting business working sessions to capture required IT services / needs
•Translating strategies into actionable rolling plans to support business needs
•Aligning IT initiatives to the strategic map and balanced scorecards
•Preparing and leading Strategic Review Meetings (SRMs)
•Collaborating with the IT leadership team to identify new IT services, key technologies, and architecture
components and to create a technology roadmap and strategies including mobile, infrastructure, sourcing, etc.
•Anticipating business demands for new IT services; understanding the business strategy’s impact on IT and helping
to define the IT services to build / deliver
•Determining how IT services will be delivered to the customer and manage key vendor relationships at a strategic
level
•Determining what channels customers interact with to obtain IT services
•Working with the CBO / IT Finance Office to determine IT funding
•Performing IT strategy refreshes
•Creating transformation roadmaps
•Gathering and analyzing industry and external information such as trends, initiatives, and future forecasts to
make recommendations on future strategic directions
•Ensuring Amtrak corporate strategy is cascaded appropriately within IT
•Training and mentoring IT population on strategy, methodologies and process

Desired Skills and Experience
PREFERRED EDUCATION:
Master’s degree or equivalent
WORK EXPERIENCE:
•Demonstrated years of business or IT strategy experience
•Demonstrated ability to perform all essential functions
•Strong knowledge of IT architecture and systems
•Broad technical background and current with the most recent IT technology trends
•Proven experience working with senior leadership on defining and delivering on a strategic roadmap
•Possess a proven track record for being detail-oriented with a demonstrated ability to motivate and follow-through
on projects
•Strong organizational, interpersonal, and written communication skills
•Significant expertise with IT strategy frameworks and methodologies
PREFERRED WORK EXPERIENCE:
•Experience working with the Palladium Scorecard process and strategy execution
•Experience in the transportation industry
•Experience working in a highly technical environment
•Extensive years of business or IT strategy experience
•Experience in developing training, communication, and change management plans
COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
