Director - Finance - American Academy of Ophthalmology - San Francisco


Job description
The Director of Finance is responsible for the activities of the finance department which totals nine staff (two direct reports). The department carries out the accounting, budgeting, financial and tax functions, and reporting at AAO, including the Academy and its subsidiaries, and managed client organizations (e.g. AUPO, AGS, etc.). The position is responsible for developing and maintaining procedures and systems for financial control and safeguarding of Academy assets.

Responsibilities:
Maintain sound financial and accounting systems and processes to assure legality and integrity of AAO.
Determine overall outline of accounting and financial reporting policy and procedures.
Manage overall department staffing requirements, assignments, hires, training needed.
Determine appropriate accounting treatment/policy for complex transactions or situations.
Determine strategies for response to audits, e.g. IRS and FEC.
Evaluate risk to AAO and department function with regards to security and reliability of systems.
Maintain format and structure for internal reporting and analysis projects.
Determine timeframe and requirements for accomplishment of goals and maintenance of ongoing processes.
Determine methodology for reconciliations and/or accomplishments of complex accounting and audit problems, e.g. appropriate use of donor funds, correct reporting of tax entity revenue and expense.

Determine goal and strategy options in forecasts and financial reports.
Present budgets and participate in audit and investment committee meetings.
Prepare and review financial materials and reports for CFO, CEO and Board.
Work collaboratively with the Executive Team to prepare annual budgets.

Desired Skills and Experience
Ten plus years of experience in a finance leadership role
Thorough and broad knowledge of GAAP principles including not-for-profit accounting rules and tax laws, including those of Political Action Committees
Thorough and broad knowledge of cost accounting and general business principles
Strong knowledge of financial software applications and systems in general
Thorough and broad knowledge and experience in the application of GAAP in a multi-company environment, including in a not-for-profit organization
Broad knowledge of PAC and FEC campaign laws and reporting requirements
Strong information-gathering and investigative abilities in order to understand complex situations and also to understand when simple situations are made complex
Ability to summarize data and information quantitatively and write text around it
Work in a team demonstrating strong leadership ability and diplomacy
Strong verbal, written and presentation skills
Analytical problem solving
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
CPA or MBA
Continuing and recent ongoing professional education in finance, management and general business
