Director - Development - Follett - Westchester


Job description
The Director of Development, Academic Tools & Programs will have primary responsibility for building and enhancing the following applications that are critical to Follett’s digital strategy:
ConnectOnce for Institutions: Provides a single connection with the campus to enable Follett’s Academic Tools and Programs and provide campus data to Follett systems.
Follett Discover: The smartest way for faculty to seek out, evaluate and adopt course materials. Then, as soon as students register for a course, the materials are ready and attainable. Follett Discover benefits faculty, students and administrators by focusing on one goal: enabling student success.
Responsibilities:
Participate in strategy and requirements discussions with the business
Elaborate requirements with the business and technical teams
Create estimates for development hours and participate in benefits analysis
Manage development resources; acquire resources to meet timeline
Create department budget and manage costs
Communicate status of development to business / project team and internal / external stakeholders
Manage resources involved in performance monitoring, capacity planning, release deployment, etc.


Desired Skills and Experience
8-10 years of software development experience, 3-5 years of management experience
Computer Science degree preferred
Managing or leading delivery of web applications or services projects with good scalability and fault tolerance
Experience building applications for the cloud
Experience with Test Driven Development and Continuous Integration
Education Technology industry experience in the higher education market
Strong knowledge of SIS (Student Information Systems) applications and database structures
Knowledge of LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) to allow remote tools and content to be integrated into tool consumers, such as a Learning Management System (LMS)
Knowledge of SSO (Single Sign On) functionality and software utilities

Highly Desirable Qualifications:
Experience building applications for Software as a Service
Experience with Agile development methodologies
Automated Infrastructure Management (Chef preferable)
Language Experience: Managing successful projects with Java (or C#), coding in Java, scripting in Ruby or PERL, knowledge of C#.NET
Knowledge with data formats: XML, JSON, YAML for XML-familiarity with both DOM and SAX-based processing approach
Databases: NoSQL (Mongodb, Couchdb, Cassandra, or similar), SQL (good experience with one of: MySQL, Oracle SQL, or MS SQL)
Familiarity with web Presentation layer: HTML, CSS, jQuery
Strong experience with version control (Git preferred)
Linux skills: Shell, package managers
Networking technologies: TCP/IP, VPN
Web Services experience with WSDL and REST
Spring framework experience
