Director - Business Analysis - DeVry University - Chicago


Job description
The Director, Business Analysis is a critical member of the program team. He/she will be responsible for leading and driving all strategic and operational analytics necessary to develop and implement key program initiatives designed to grow enrollment and improve student outcomes. The Director will be responsible for developing, consolidating, and tracking a broad set of business metrics including but not limited to: marketing (return on investment, prospective student preference), student outcome (e.g., learning outcomes, career outcomes, graduation rates), operational (e.g., inquiries, conversion) and financial (e.g., profitability, capital).


The Director will work with the rest of the team to proactively define the key business questions to be answered, structure the data and analysis needed to answer the questions, complete the analyses, and be able to articulate the business implications of his/her work. The Director will be highly motivated and collaborative and will work effectively with others in the organization to achieve the program objectives.


Planning process
o With the General Manager, support annual planning and strategic planning for assigned Programs. Size and prioritize key priorities.
o Develop business insights to inform changes in program strategy.
o Develop quantitative measures for the year – p&ls, capital needs, enrollment objectives, key success metrics Business Metrics – support development and creation of program metrics and dashboards. Example metrics include: financial metrics, student outcome metrics, marketing metrics (e.g., student preference), inquiry/conversion metrics, etc) Track results of various initiatives vs agreed upon metrics.
o Understand and explain variances vs plan and coordinate with rest of organ
o Consumer insights

Opportunity identification
o Support teams to structure data and analysis to analyze issues and identify improvement opportunities
o Keep up to date on industry and programmatic regulations and compliance
o Portfolio management

Program profitability
o Develop pricing strategies to increase market share and profitability
o Support development and ongoing refinement of Program P&Ls.
o Analyze program profitability. Proactively identify opportunities to improve profitably.
o Create pro forma P&Ls to size impact of various initiatives.
o Fiscal budgeting / external market sizing
o Track results vs plan

Key Initiatives
o Provide analytical support to the General Manager or key project teams to help size and prioritize the impact of various initiatives – e.g., pricing. cost reduction, etc.

Business Cases
o Develop business cases to support new product and program initiatives or projects as required

Process
o Define and improve upon processes for gathering, storing, reporting, and sharing data and analytics across the organization

Desired Skills and Experience
8+ years prior experience in roles with heavy business analysis requirements – e.g., business analyst, management or internal consulting
Bachelor’s degree required.
A passion for “the truth”; high intellectual curiosity; thought leader; proactive; self-starter; leadership skills to take charge and facilitate data-gathering or analytic exercises
Superior analytic, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
Strong business acumen; sufficient business exposure and experience to interpret analytical results and translate into ideas and/or actionable recommendations
Understanding of broad set of business and operational metrics (e.g., not just financial)
Experience preparing business cases to justify projects
Able to deal with imperfect data – make recommendations with available information; help organization make trade-off of making decisions with less than ideal information versus time/effort required to improve data or analysis
Strong attention to detail
Quick learner – able to learn organization, new analytical approaches and tools.
Able to translate analyses into actionable recommendations
Able to document and communicate results of work in both written and verbal form. Strong presentation skills; Able to contribute to/create management presentations
Demonstrated ability to work with broad set of stakeholders; ability to sort through ambiguity and confusion to bring structure and order to decisions
