Senior Director - Hardware Engineering - Medtronic - Los Angeles


Job description
The Senior Director, Hardware Engineering will partner with Medtronic Diabetes leadership to drive customer centric product development. This individual, in collaboration with Chief Technology Officer, will help determine and execute the overall strategic technology plan to drive the future growth and overall success of the organization in an increasingly competitive and dynamic environment. Also serves as a functional lead managing the hardware engineering center of excellence (COE) comprised of mechanical and electrical engineers. This individual will focus on driving excellence in product development, research and technology. Will actively lead team of hardware engineering resources and exhibit a true general management/ talent management mindset, prioritizing the needs of the overall Diabetes business ahead of specific functional interests.



Position Responsibilities:
• Responsible to build functional bench strength – includes staffing, training, completing performance evaluations and actively supporting career development for future department and business leaders, in addition to imparting technical expertise, serves as ongoing employee coach, role model and team effectiveness initiatives.
• Work cross-functionally with senior counterparts to develop overall product development, research and technology strategy. Seek opportunities to leverage development and technology efforts across the business and allocates financial and human resources to ensure initiatives are supported.
• Build hardware engineering organizational capability with a focus on customer centric product development.
• Accelerate and lead new product development and technology development initiatives to enable faster and broader penetration of the market; know and create in response to the market.
• Drive accountability, consistency, quality, standardization and discipline across product development function.
• Establish strategy for all product development, engineering and technology development related activities for multiple product lines.
• Ensure completion of new products and modification to existing products is completed according to project timelines and within budget.
• Drive execution, especially cross-functional project management.
• Maintain customer focus; understand the needs of our customers, including patients, physicians, and regulators and reimbursement; engage in regular contact with customers.
• Takes lead role in developing partnerships with companies and/or institutions outside Medtronic to leverage the strengths of each party to accelerate mutually beneficial research. Forecast operating costs and participate in the Annual Operating Process, including providing the financial ROI on new product development, research and technology programs.
• Constantly strive to build world class product development, research and technology functions; recruit, retain and develop top technical and scientific talent.
• Support constructive, positive internal communications processes.

Desired Skills and Experience
Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelors’ degree in engineering or scientific discipline
• 10+ years professional technical leadership experience with experience leading a hardware team in a product development environment
• Experience driving for fast product development, concurrent engineering, and completion of complex projects on schedule and within budget
• Experience identifying and assigning resources toward specific product initiatives
• Strong leadership skills (including active listening skills, presentation skills) and proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative, inclusive organization and environment
• Strong business acumen with general management perspective
• Experience managing internal and external “vendor” relationships
• Experience as an effective and motivational leader of others; team facilitation skills
Desired/Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in business (MBA) or scientific/medical field or PhD in engineering, math or other scientific/medical field preferred
• Strong knowledge of Product Development Process, Stage Gate Approach, and Design Control
• Senior-level (director) experience in a large global corporate matrix environment
• Medical device experience
• Formal project management training
• Recent experience with an organization undergoing significant organizational or change management
