Director - Organizational and Employee Development - University of Colorado - Boulder


Job description
We welcome applicants for the Director of Employee and Organizational Development (OED) at the University of Colorado Boulder. The Director will create, manage, and continuously improve supervisory, management and leadership development programs for the Boulder campus; oversee the delivery of all OED training programs; deliver organizational development work and assessment projects for the campus; oversee and manage the department of Human Resources’ communications, marketing, and outreach; oversee and manage employee engagement efforts; and supervise OED staff. We are looking for an experienced HR professional who is knowledgeable of organizational development and change methods with the ability to strategically and tactfully collaborate with leaders across campus.

The Office of Organizational and Employee Development, situated within CU-Boulder’s Department of Human Resources, is committed to serving the individual and departmental training and development needs of CU-Boulder’s employees through seminars, programs, facilitation, assessment and development work. We support the people who enable CU-Boulder to be a leading comprehensive research university dedicated to superb teaching, research, scholarship, and creative works.
What your key responsibilities will be:
The Director of the Office of Organizational and Employee Development (OED) currently oversees a team of three OED professionals with primary responsibilities in five key areas:
• Employee Engagement
• Organizational Assessment
• Training & Development
• Change Management
• HR Communications & Marketing
The successful candidate will partner with leaders across campus as needed to assess their needs and provide tools and solutions to address them.
In addition to identifying new needs and solutions, the incumbent will continue to drive and evolve a number of initiatives already in place to address existing issues and opportunities. These initiatives include:
• A comprehensive development program termed “The Training Ladder”, a program focused on developing management and leadership excellence at all levels of the organization.
• The ongoing development and delivery of non-supervisory training including seminars, mentor programs, and access programs (ESL, GED, etc.), utilizing in-person and online delivery where appropriate, to support campus employees in delivering against the requirements of their current and potential future roles.
• Assessment and possible full-scale implementation of a recently piloted 360 evaluation process focused on clarifying expectations and improving employee capability across the campus.
• An existing employee engagement program designed to ensure that CU-Boulder remains a place where employees want to work and utilize their talents every day.
• A comprehensive communication strategy to support the position of HR as a strategic campus partner, involving in-person, email, print, web, and social media platforms.
In addition to management of the OED, the incumbent will be a member of the HR Leadership Team reporting directly to the Chief Human Resources Officer for the Campus. As such, the successful candidate will be expected to participate with his/her HR colleagues on the leadership team to continually improve HR support to the campus. This will include contributing to and possibly leading work related to campus HR strategy and initiatives that are outside of the OED functional area.

Desired Skills and Experience
What we require:
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in human resources, business administration/management, organizational development, organizational psychology, communication or closely related field
• A minimum of 5-7 years professional human resource experience in a large scale corporation or institution, at least two years of which must be engaged in organizational and employee development or training, and three of which must be supervising human resource professionals
• Demonstrated knowledge of training and development, talent management and federal and state rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to human resources
• Ability to read, interpret and comply with complex rules, regulations, policies and procedures
• Knowledge of the principles and methods of managing organizational change and organizational development

What we’d like you to have:
• Master’s degree in a discipline related to organizational development/effectiveness, human resources, business administration, industrial psychology, communication or closely related field
• Experience in providing training and development programs in a complex, higher education environment
• Certifications or demonstrated experience using assessment tools such as DiSC, Meyers-Briggs, and/or StrengthsFinder
• Demonstrated experience leading employee engagement surveys and resulting initiatives
• Demonstrated experience and knowledge of implementing strategic communication and marketing strategies, preferably in a human resources or higher education environment
• Strong technical knowledge, particularly with software and media used in training and development and marketing and communication (e.g. PowerPoint, Prezi, online training (SkillSoft) and webinar technology, Adobe design, website content editing, etc.)
• Professional human resource certification through the Society for Human Resource Management (PHR, SPHR)
