Role Summary
The Director of Institutional Giving secures support for NPR from institutional partners including foundations and corporate philanthropic sources, and helps to design and execute a national campaign framework for foundation support. Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Institutional Giving, the Director is part of a skilled team that pursues funding for support of NPR priorities, initiatives, and news coverage, with an emphasis on new donors and multi-year grants. The group also stewards relationships with existing foundation partners to ensure funding and relationships are lasting.

Essential Duties Include:
Directs and facilitates high-capacity institutional donor involvement including discovery, cultivation, solicitation/close and stewardship. Manages a portfolio of approximately 50 prospects, largely consisting of major gifts prospects ($500,000 and more). Designs fundraising strategies and determines appropriate steps for cultivation and solicitation, contacts prospective funding sources and follows up with appropriate actions such as preparing senior NPR staff for prospective donor meetings through written and/or oral briefings, and schedules and attends meetings and presentations.
Interacts with funders over the phone, e-mail, and in person (including up to 35% travel), to develop and deepen relationships through formal and informal stewardship.
Works with the senior Development staff to identify, plan for, and execute strategies for foundation support within a national capital campaign.
Researches, identifies and cultivates new sources of funding.
Provides direction and oversight of draft and final proposals, reports, correspondence and other accompanying materials, including budgets, for funders in portfolio. Oversees the production of final proposals and reports on deadline with accompanying materials.
Works collaboratively with senior Development team and other team members to establish and achieve revenue goals, and to meet deadlines.
Initiates and participates in project development discussions with staff from other divisions. Develops a thorough knowledge of digital and on-air program offerings and initiatives at NPR.
Monitors new grant-making activity and changing developments in the community of institutional donors.
Works collaboratively with other Development Division staff by sharing materials in order to improve the quality of the division’s materials.
Updates and maintains files and/or database to reflect contacts with funders.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Serves as an appropriate representative of NPR and its member stations with all audiences.

Desired Skills and Experience
Education: Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree or professional certification a plus.

Required Skills:
Minimum of six years of progressively responsible experience in a complex organization.
Demonstrated fundraising success of grants over $500,000 and annual fundraising of over $3 million.
Demonstrated experience in one or more national capital campaigns.
Proven ability to strategically and effectively build relationships and partnerships with foundations.
Ability to eloquently articulate NPR’s mission and programs, and show passion for the mission of NPR.
Must have excellent writing and editing skills, preferably in the area of development and/or grant writing.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with and gain the respect and support of various constituencies, including NPR administrative and volunteer leadership, donors, colleagues, and member stations.
Must possess good judgment and exercise diplomacy in dealing with a variety of constituents.
Must have excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize work appropriately and adapt easily to changing priorities. Able to apply strategic and creative thinking, while being persistent, motivated and energetic, along with the ability to work in detail-oriented fashion.
Must be willing and able to manage up to 35% travel as needed.
