eBay is looking for a skilled and dynamic leader to drive the evolution of one of the world’s largest Hadoop installations, integrated with an analytic and data environment that powers a rapidly growing business where over 100 million active, worldwide users transact at a rate of more than $2,100 of goods every second. You will help eBay leverage its unique end-to-end data set and drive continuous innovation to accelerate top-line growth for the company. You will direct the utilization of a significant investment in Big Data technologies while helping continue to build out our world-class analytics infrastructure. Your innovation and execution will directly enable our business goals, partnering with internal customers to remove barriers to data-driven insights. Our vision is “development at the speed of thought” – and you’d be spearheading that effort as a Director of Hadoop Platform within eBay’s Platform and Infrastructure organization.
As the Director of Hadoop Platform at eBay, you will be responsible for the following:
Evolving a scalable, extensible, reliable, and inter-operable Hadoop infrastructure, optimizing hardware and software configurations, and enabling rapid deployment of new Hadoop capacity and capabilities.
Delivering enterprise quality and maturity while aggressively evolving next-generation Hadoop capabilities.
Defining eBay’s Hadoop and open-processing strategy, aligning technology with customer needs and emergent opportunities.
Planning and driving the roadmap for delivery of new Hadoop/open-processing capabilities based on strategy, vision, and priorities.
Integrating Hadoop strategy, vision, and architecture with other Analytics platforms including Business Intelligence, Enterprise Data Warehouse, and other massive-scale, parallel-processing platforms.
Develop and lead a multi-location organization with resources in San Jose, CA and Seattle, WA, and working with partner teams in Shanghai, China.
Working with Engineering, Architecture, Product Management, QA, and Operations resources to design and implement innovative solutions that meet needs with respect to functionality, performance, scalability, reliability, realistic implementation schedules, and adherence to development goals and principles.
A strong candidate must be able to effectively direct the design, development, and deployment of major platform features, working jointly with other teams to deliver sophisticated, cross-platform products. They will be expected to mentor and lead architecture and engineering resources in the design and implementation of sophisticated and efficient Hadoop capabilities
Desired Skills and Experience
The candidate should have strong leadership skills that allow them to effectively: direct remote employees, lead and develop technical resources, negotiate and coordinate with other functions, and drive planning and tracking efforts.
The candidate’s technical skills should include: a detailed understanding of large scale distributed data processing frameworks and technologies (Map/Reduce, SQL, HBase, Hive, Stinger, Impala, etc.) in a parallel processing context, experience with object-oriented technologies and modular design principles, and experience with a variety of programming languages, specifically Java, Ruby, C/C++, Perl, and Python.
The candidate should have a deep background in all aspects of software engineering and the development lifecycle with strong skills in the areas of data processing platforms, application infrastructure, data processing, and parallel architecture.
The candidate must have demonstrated leadership in business continuity processes, performance analysis and optimization, capacity modeling, server and network architecture, and open-source development methodologies.
A strong candidate must have experience and demonstrated aptitude in evaluating complex requirements, providing input on effective design, and working as part of a small, focused team to deliver high quality end-to-end applications, optimized for cost-efficiency.
The candidate must demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills.
