Job Summary: The Director of R&D is responsible for developing a strategically guided development plan to lead the current product portfolio continuation engineering efforts as well as evaluate new product opportunities.  The position includes interacting with Key Opinion Leaders to assess customer needs and potential development projects.  The individual will possess excellent people skills, project management abilities and be able to identify and prioritize opportunities.  Experience developing milestone based budgets and successfully leading the R&D department to on time completion of the needed projects within budget is a key requirement.  This position works cross-functionally with other departments while spanning several engineering disciplines.  In addition, the candidate will have responsibility for maintaining and developing the IP portfolio and continue surveillance of the IP landscape.  This person must be able to manage a variety of team members, provide strategic input on long-range business plans, manage budgets, provide leadership across departments and ensure that all FDA, ISO and GMP regulations are being met. 

Desired Skills & Experience

Education:
A Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Physical Science is required. A Master's Degree or PHD preferred
Qualification:
A minimum of eight to ten years experience in a medical device engineering and product development position is highly desirable. 
Product development experience with Class I or Class II medical devices. 
Candidates must have the ability to demonstrate proficiency and manage across technical areas of expertise including chemical engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering. 
Candidates must have experience working with an active product line and a successful record of identifying and bringing to market new products or product improvements.
History of partnering with physicians and colleagues to identify unmet clinical needs and working with engineering teams to develop solutions are additional requirements.
This role requires an excellent track record of managing medical device development programs from concept through design, validation, clinical trial, product release, as well as sustaining engineering regarding post launch product management.
Strong leadership skills are also required for this position, coupled with excellent management history with a minimum of 5 years experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams
