Job Description
AOL’s Online Advertising R&D group in Mountain View, CA has an opportunity for a Principal Software Engineer to work with a small, fast moving, and highly talented R&D team doing large scale data analytics. In this position you will lead a small team of developers in building an analytics system that involves both large scale data processing and a web front end.
This is an opportunity for a bright and talented individual to join an elite team of post-doctorate researchers and engineers building research products that have a high impact, while enjoying a casual working environment. This job is for someone who likes to proactively solve challenging design and engineering problems, is intrigued by mathematics and statistics, and is capable of understanding how details impact the "big picture" and vice versa. What Will You Do?
• Develop web applications and client-server framework for our LSA products
• Research new web technologies and create POC prototypes
• Develop robust and reusable software components
• Work closely with scientists to understand new insights and ways of leveraging our data to increase revenue
• Improve the power and flexibility of the analytics backend to automate new analytic reports across all campaigns and sites on our network.
• Work to continuously improving database architecture, data modeling and design patterns
• Mentor less experienced team members
• Create ways to represent and communicate insights from large amounts of data
• Have fun!
About AOL’s Large Scale Analytics (LSA)
The R&D LSA team works with large-scale distributed computing systems such as Hadoop and related technologies to analyze data and drive innovation. We crawl, parse, index, and create models from large scale data. Recent projects include contextual analysis, personalized ad retargeting, and user segmentation and insights.

Desired Skills & Experience
• Has 3+ years of experience in programming with Java
• Has 6+ years of related software development experience in traditional languages (C/C++/Java/C#)
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Excellent technical leadership skills and mentoring of less experience team members
• Has experience with Agile, Scrum and SDLC processes
• Knowledge of web technologies (JavaScript, Ajax, JQuery, HTML5, CSS)
• Practical use of basic design patterns (Observer, Singleton, Factory, Builder, MVC) and data modeling
• Experience with basic database design and SQL
• Experience with either distributed computing (Hadoop/Cloud) or parallel processing (CUDA/threads/MPI)
• Likes to learn new technologies
• Likes to prototype at the boundaries of what is possible
• Likes to unleash creativity on client-side web development
• Wants to write software that runs on +9,600 CPU Cores
• Likes to work in a fast pace and intellectually challenging environment where requirements can often change and new discoveries are being made
• Proven ability to write well engineered software within tight timeline
• Has at a BS in Computer Science or related field (MS a plus)
• Has 6+ years of related software development experience in traditional languages (C/C++/Java/C#)
