Director of Network Operations/ Field Services Columbia University - New York City



Job Description

Under general supervision, the incumbent reports to the AVP of IT Operations and works closely with direct reports, peer technical groups and other support organizations / groups in order to provide leadership in the maintenance of a central data and voice network for over 30,000 users as well as multiple off-sight locations throughout the New York City Metropolitan Area.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Sets strategic direction for the installation, maintenance, and operation of the network infrastructure.
- Overseeing the Network Operations Center (NOC).
- Responsible for providing satisfactory service to the voice (Rolm CBX) and VOiP system.
- Approves and reviews all operational budgets.
- Responsible for ensuring all future resource planning needs are met.
- Has ultimate responsibility for all network operation activities.
- Responsible for all hire/fire decisions and shares decisions with Head of IT sub-function.
- Sets standards for design, operational procedures.
- Writes policy and procedure documentation.
- Develops strategic operational goals based on CUIT and university-wide IT strategies.
- Consults on maintenance and solutions of the most complex hardware/software and critical network systems.
- Sets objectives and standards, and is ultimately responsible for, the deployment and delivery of all projects and products, including inventory tracking, equipment configuration, installation of complex networks, and post-installation testing.

Additional Responsibilities:
- Oversees vendor management.
- Responsible for overseeing hired contract help
- Contributes to vendor negotiations.
- Assesses vendors, approves and/or proposes vendor solutions.
- Represents the group to senior management across CU and external organizations.
- Sets expectations for and actively fosters constructive problem solving and collaboration among CUIT team members at all levels.
- Collaborates with customer groups to define future solutions.
- Responsible for managing a team of managers.
- Establishes roles and performance goals, identifies developmental needs and provides development opportunities.
- Has oversight responsibility for all hiring/firing decisions.
- Guides and mentors team members.
- Sets people strategy and plans for network operations team.

Desired Skills & Experience

Minimum Qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree desirable.
- A minimum of 7+ years related experience.
- Broad knowledge of a range of technical specialties.
- Expert knowledge of the business and support strategies.
- Demonstrated mastery of previous level's skills and responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

- CCNA Certification or equivalent experience preferred.
