Director Foundation Government Relations Japan Society New York

Japan Society seeks a Director, Foundation and Government Relations to lead fundraising efforts to obtain restricted program support, general operating funds, and funding for capital projects from foundations and city, state and federal government agencies. The Director is responsible for developing a fundraising strategy and annual fundraising calendar, identifying new funding sources, stewarding current and prospective funders, drafting and editing proposals and reports, and supervising the department’s staff. The Director must be a proactive, innovative leader with superior communication skills who can expand Japan Society’s funding sources by identifying and stewarding new funding prospects. This position works closely with Japan Society’s President, Chief Development Officer, senior management, and program directors as a key member of the organization’s development team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Establish the fundraising strategy, set priorities, develop and implement the annual fundraising calendar for foundation and government support;
Work with program directors and other key staff to develop project proposals;
Research and identify new funding sources and opportunities to expand foundation and government support;
Steward relationships with current funders, and cultivate new and prospective funders; Organize site visits and prepare guest lists for Japan Society events, openings, etc.;
Draft and edit grant proposals, reports, concept papers, acknowledgement letters, correspondence and other communications;
Supervise and mentor department staff. Assign and monitor staff projects;
Ensure accurate tracking of grant submissions, reporting, acknowledgements, correspondence, receipt of grants and pledges, and other relevant data;
Monitor compliance with grant and reporting requirements;
Maintain Japan Society’s DataArts profiles, New York State Grants Gateway, New York City HHS Accelerator, and Federal System for Award Management (SAM) required for government funding;
Coordinate with development and program staff on funding credit lines;
Serve as staff liaison to Board of Trustees Program Committee;
Administer departmental budget.
Qualifications:
BA required, relevant master’s degree preferred;
Minimum seven years of fundraising experience with a demonstrated track record of success in securing foundation and government grants. Strong proficiency in the grants development process including prospect research, proposal and budget development, solicitation and gift management;
Outstanding writing skills with the ability to write persuasively and quickly. Strong verbal presentation skills essential;
Must be an innovative and strategic thinker, and able to implement new initiatives;
Strong organizational skills, ability to work well under pressure, and meet deadlines is essential;
Must possess strong interpersonal skills and be a team player;
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Raiser’s Edge or similar donor management software;
Familiarity with fundraising in the arts and cultural sector preferred;
Knowledge of Japanese society, culture and language a plus.
