The Director of Casting will oversee the casting needs for Discovery Studios fast paced Development Department. Candidate will ideally have 7-10 years of experience casting talent for both male and female skewing cable networks. A track record of casting in a broad variety of genres and formats is a must. Strong written and verbal skills, and the ability to lead and energize a team is required. Ideal candidate must demonstrate knowledge and experience in development casting, as well as a history of generating talent based concepts. Proven success in securing hard to find talent and the ability to deliver under deadline is essential.

Responsibilities:

1. Work with Studios casting and development team, as well as external development producers, to find undiscovered, diverse, and dynamic talent.
2. Prepare and oversee casting reels, written materials, and video clips for review by network and production executives.
3. Create and manage casting budgets.
4. Establish clear goals for the casting team and work with them to create innovative strategies to achieve those goals.
5. Negotiate and secure talent holding deals.
6. Conceive new talent-based formats as well as generate new talent-led ideas to pitch to the networks.
7. Develop and update casting and talent databases.
8. Maintain weekly status reports of all existing projects and potential new talent.
9. Source and assess new talent via live performances, conventions, conferences, associations, organizations, businesses, minority organizations, universities and colleges, independent professionals, web searches, newspapers, books, magazines, talent representatives and all other applicable sources.
10. Travel throughout the US and internationally to seek undiscovered and diverse talent for potential series concepts.
11. Meet prospective talent and identify those exceptional individuals, subcultures, and worlds to bring to the development team.
12. Develop and maintain strong relationships within the entertainment community: Talent agents, talent managers, publicists, as well as with the talent themselves.
13. Act as point person to the Discovery family of networks in all areas of casting.
14. Set up and oversee auditions for specific casting needs and general searches.
15. Coordinate all incoming casting materials and correspondence by talent and talent reps. Review such material in a timely manner and any appropriate follow-up correspondence.
16. Work in concert with post department to ingest casting media, create edit schedules.
17. Oversee the execution of all casting reels and network presentation materials.
Requirements:

* Applicants must have a minimum of seven years of casting experience in the entertainment industry and in non-fiction/unscripted/reality television.
* Applicants must have well-established contacts with producers, talent agencies, personal management firms, and publicists.
* Applicants must have a proven eye for detecting and casting talent, knowledge of all aspects of talent development, and casting in non-scripted and documentary television.
* Applicants must have solid editorial judgment. Background in producing, writing, content development a plus.
* Applicants must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and excellent verbal and written communications skills.
* A demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a very high-volume workload.
* Applicants must be self-motivated with demonstrated ability to take the initiative, make decisive decisions, and exhibit a high level of tenacity and follow through.
* Experience with Skype, Avid, Final Cut, Microsoft Word, Pages, Excel, Lotus Notes, and other software applications are desirable.
