Your focus will include:
Monitoring format, category trends, sales, and customer review data for books and developing and maintaining strong relationships with authors, literary agents, publishers, and industry contacts
Identifying new leads and rights from publishers and agents, evaluating the projects and mobilizing the acquisition team to move quickly on opportunities
Owning and leading weekly acquisition meetings and decision-making for the titles we acquire
Watch: Career Advice Helping to develop the editorial vision and content acquisition goals with the Associate Publisher and Publisher, setting and employing tactics for you and your team to meet or exceed those goals
Providing leadership, guidance, and development opportunities for your direct reports
Working closely with our internal teams (e.g. Finance, Studio, Marketing, Sales) to track work from acquisition through publication
Basic Qualifications
BA/BS required in English, Journalism, Communications, or related field
5 or more years of experience as an acquisitions editor or literary agent identifying, evaluating, and acquiring content, or 5 or more years of direct experience with negotiating book, media, or other related contracts
5 or more years of experience managing people
Proficiency with MS Office, particularly Excel and Word
Demonstrated experience in negotiations
Preferred Qualifications
Experience owning and managing to a P&L or departmental goals
Strong analytical skills: the ability and desire to use a variety of data to make decisions, back up proposals, and measure results
Demonstrated creativity in identifying new business opportunities
Ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
Experience acquiring, developing, or pitching content across multiple categories
Proven editorial judgment and experience working with top authors
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Able to work in New York City (preferred) or, at a minimum, travel as needed to company offices
