Director - Accounting - FHI 360 - Washington
Job description

We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Director, Financial Accounting in Durham, NC or Washington, DC.
Directs the planning and implementation of departmental activities related to general accounting functions and preparation of reports and statistics reflecting earnings, profits, cash balances, and other financial results. Responsible for the maintenance and accuracy of the ledger accounts and financial statements in compliance with FHI 360 and GAAP standards. Formulates and directs the administration of approved accounting practices. Oversees the efficient operation and cost-effectiveness of operating systems and programs supporting the Finance organization. May participate in the most complex accounting projects. Responsible for managing people including: staffing and onboarding, separations, performance reviews and compensation decisions. Implements financial strategy and aligns resources to support strategic goals. Knowledge of Cost Accounting Standards (CAS) and Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) may also be required.
Additional Responsibilities:
Management of global accounting operations including a team of up to 20 professionals in an International setting.
In coordination with the Controller ensures that proper staffing levels are maintained in the financial accounting department.
In collaboration with the Associate Director, Field Accounting, leads the annual and monthly closing process to ensure all departments follow the monthly closing schedule.
Contributes to the preparation of consolidated financial statements.
Provide strategic direction to the financial accounting team and ensures that department objectives are in line with FHI 360’s strategic priorities.
Act as the lead interface between the Accounts Payable (AP), Payroll and Labor Distribution and General Ledger (GL) functions within the Controller’s office.
Overall responsibility for managing the global GL ensuring that all GL accounts are reconciled on a monthly basis.
In coordination with the Controller, establishes and maintains proper risk management processes within the Controller’s office.
Collaborates with the financial systems project manager to ensure AP, GL, and Labor Distribution (LD) modules are designed and configured for optimum performance.
In collaboration with the treasury department prepares the monthly borrowing base report and coordinate the monthly reporting process to the bank.
Develops and implements goals, policies, priorities, and procedures relating to financial management, accounting, and/or payroll.
Responsible for the employment, training, motivation, discipline and performance management of assigned employees.
In coordination with the Audit and Tax function, ensures that proper audit schedules are maintained by the general accounting staff and accounting policies are implemented throughout the organization.
Directs fixed asset control and depreciation, accrual to meet anticipated liabilities, preparation of general tax reports such as those for sales, payroll, personal property taxes, and payable/receivables.
Collaborate with other departments to establish best practices protocols for monthly reporting with project managers.
Work closely with other departments to develop and conduct training programs for field accountants and operational staff.

Desired Skills and Experience
Education --------- Bachelor's Degree or its International Equivalent - Accounting, Business Administration, Finance or Related Field. Work Experience --------------- Management Experience - 5+ Years Certifications --------------- CPA
Typically requires a bachelor's degree (in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration) or international equivalent, and 10 years of related experience with five (5) years of supervisory/management experience and five (5) years working at the corporate or organization level. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation required. Past experience managing a financial accounting department with full accounting cycle experience is required. Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English.
Experience working in a Non-government organization (NGO).
Experience working with an international organization a plus.
Previous experience as a Controller in a small to medium size organization is preferred.
