The Director of Litigation position will be responsible for leading a team of litigators and staff that manages and oversees SIEA’s litigation matters across North America. The litigation team consults with and advises business units across SIEA’s organization and also coordinates with other Sony group companies (domestically and abroad) on matters where other Sony companies are parties. This team also provides strategic advice and direction when needed on the company’s litigation matters in Latin America.

SIEA’s litigation matters include a wide variety of commercial disputes. Patent ligitation matters constitute a significant portion of the company’s litigation docket, but the company also prosecutes and defends copyright, trademark, trade secret and unfair competition actions. The litigation team also handles class action matters, other types of consumer complaints and other traditional commercial disputes such as breach of contract cases.
Responsibilities:
Oversight and management of SIEA’s litigation matters
Provide strategic advice to management and business to avoid or resolve litigation and regulatory matters
Use and create as necessary internal litigation-related processes (e.g., litigation holds and e-discovery)
Work closely with SIEA’s Vice President-Deputy General Counsel and other executive legal management on litigation and regulatory strategy
Manage and direct litigation attorneys and staff
Manage outside litigation counsel
Advise other legal teams on litigation risk management
Report to management on litigation matters
Qualifications
As Director of Litigation, you should have:
Extensive civil litigation experience in a broad range of commercial disputes, including patent litigation, other intellectual property disputes, class-action litigation, antitrust matters and products liability suits
Exceptional interpersonal, project management and communication skills: must know how to ask clear, concise, precise questions often involving complex technological matters to get requisite answers from businesspeople and Legal Department colleagues
Experience resolving large and complex litigation and regulatory matters
Knowledge of patent proceedings before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office and the International Trade Commission
In-depth substantive knowledge of patent, copyright, trademark, trade secret and unfair competition laws.
Experience with regulatory inquiries such as FTC and state attorneys general investigations
Experience in both private practice and in a corporate legal department
Experience overseeing and managing a legal staff and outside counsel
Strong technological affinity, experience or expertise in software and hardware fields
Demonstrated, strategic, business-minded approach to resolving litigation
Existing clear understanding of, or demonstrated aptitude to grasp quickly, SIEA’s business and legal needs and internal and external client drivers
Budget management experience
Excellent follow-through skills and attention to detail
Required Experience / Education:
Law degree (J.D. or L.L.M) from a top U.S. law school
License to practice law in the United States with California bar membership strongly preferred. If the candidate is not a member of the California bar, taking and passing this state’s bar exam may be required
At least 10 years’ experience working as an litigation attorney
First-hand trial experience and patent bar membership are desired
