Reporting to the VP and GM of Structured Data, the Senior Director, Research and Development Engineering will regularly interact with Senior Initiative leaders within the company like the Chief Architect, CTO, CEO amongst others. S/he would play a critical role in leading, developing, hiring and engaging the best-in-class team responsible for building the world’s largest online catalogue. Structure Data is at the right, left and center of our Company’s priorities to differentiate and continue creating a unique shopping experience for our sellers and buyers. This leader would drive the strategy, build alignment and ensure efficient execution as one agile, global team, delivering delightful customer experiences worldwide. S/he will lead her / his team to foster a culture of empowerment, trust and transparency across the organization while driving implementation of end user products with front- end focused teams like shopping experience and search across all eBay’s global sites and mobile experiences.
The Structured Data Research and Development team is at the heart of eBay's transformation to bring innovative ways to shop to all customers while helping sellers understand how to grow and optimize their online business. We are looking for a leader who can bring a deep expertise in commerce, technology, and applied research to the unique opportunity of building the world's best and most comprehensive product catalog driving ideas, innovation for product solutions to our internal users and external customers. The organization has several engineering and applied research teams engaged in interesting and groundbreaking work across several worldwide locations. Our main focus areas are highly scalable data driven systems, machine learning, natural language processing, information extraction and normalization, entity recognition, entity and taxonomy management and services, inventory insights and marketplace analytics and we are starting to build out computer vision as a new discipline in the team.
We are looking for bright and self-motivated leader, with superb management and technical leadership qualities and with excellent computer science fundamentals, responsible for developing and delivering frameworks, tools, services, and building and/or leveraging cutting-edge technologies. An experienced R&D seasoned leader with wide experience in leading a world-class software product focused R&D team, can coach our team leaders, hire senior individual contributors, work closely with other leaders in Israel, San Jose, and other locations and be hands on in designing and implementing our technical solutions while creating a fun and performance focused team culture.
Job Requirements:
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Define strategic goals and implementation plans for the Structured Data Initiative in eBay in close collaboration with Product and Operational leaders.
Coordinate and collaborate with other technology leaders in eBay to drive adoption and optimize the portfolio of structured data services. Help envision and implement end user products with front-end focused teams like shopping experience and search across all eBay's global sites and mobile experiences.
Drive collaboration within and across teams in the R&D organization – Applied Scientists, Engineers, Product Managers, Operations, Platform, external partners – to propose solutions, actively participate in the strategic and operational management to drive for permanent changes and improvements across eBay.
Refine and set the vision for the overall architecture plan and application of best practice architecture design patterns and ongoing simplification of the system landscape.
Foster a culture that continuously innovates through frequent product iterations (Agile/Scrum setup) and help the team develop their agile practices further. Set and drive the right balance in short term and long term value creation through the applied science teams in collaboration with the engineering and product teams to meet customers and company needs.
Drive and actively manage strategic partnerships with key external stakeholders like research universities, software vendors, start-ups, industry organizations.
Hire the best leaders and experienced individual contributors in their field to continue to build a diverse and balanced global team.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
15 or more years of technical leadership/people management experience
15 or more years of demonstrated technical experience with data engineering and/or platform technologies including machine learning algorithms, data sciences and other software / technology infrastructures
Strong track record for delivering innovative, successful products and services on time and within budget
Agile, proactive and comfortable in working with ambiguous specifications and ability to adapt and drive rapid changes in product direction
Excellent prioritization skills in the face of competing business demands, particularly in balancing short-term tactical and operational projects with delivering on a longer-term vision
Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as receptive listening skills, with the ability to tailor complex ideas in a clear, concise fashion to various levels of technical and non-technical management
Experience managing (with minimal direction) highly complex projects composed of team members from multiple organizations geographically dispersed
Proven ability to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with co-workers, reports, and executive management
Ability to be an “out-of-the-box thinker” looking at the larger picture and bringing new innovations and development approaches to the organization
