Research Director Access to Justice Lab Harvard University Cambridge

Reporting directly to the Access to Justice Lab Faculty Director, the Research Director works collaboratively with Access to Justice Lab researchers, CLP researchers, and outside partners on the full range of Lab’s research and projects. The ideal candidate will be an experienced field researcher in his/her own right with experience in the practice of law (preferably in litigation); quantitative data analysis skills; field research experience; and “preacher skills” (the ability to persuade skeptics to embrace new sources of knowledge). The Research Director position is particularly appropriate for an individual who anticipates, after 2-4 years, entering the academic or other market as a researcher with an agenda that includes field operations (especially randomized control trials -RCTs) in the legal arena.
The Research Director’s responsibilities encompass the full range of Access to Justice Lab activities, including:

• Design, develop, and manage Access to Justice Lab research projects;
• Negotiate with field partners;
• Review and code complex legal materials, including case files;
• Conduct reviews of legal and social science literature;
• Conduct complex data analysis including permutation testing, multi-level modeling, and fitting using Bayesian techniques; Draft all documents attendant to a field RCT, including IRB clearance requests, consent materials, advanced registration materials, and research protocols;
• Assure compliance with applicable confidentiality and data security requirements;
• Draft reports and papers publishable in top journals;
• Present results at meetings and/or conferences;
• Write summaries of ongoing and previous RCTs,
• Write grant applications;
• Train and consult on non-Lab field operations and RCTs; and
• Create instructional materials to train those hoping to learn how to run their own field operations;
• Provide substantive content for Access to Justice Lab blog, website, and other written materials.

The Research Director will assist the Faculty Director in the management of the Access to Justice Lab, including in the oversight of three other Access to Justice Lab staff. The Research Director will perform other duties as necessary or assigned.


Basic Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree required. Position level and salary will be determined by the education level, relevant experience, and skills that the applicant brings to the position. Experience running and publishing the results of field research required. Prior research experience, particularly in field operations (especially RCTs and sample surveys) required.

Additional Qualifications JD and Master’s Degree (or Masters-level training), with the latter including strong training in quantitative methods, and PhD strongly preferred.
RCT experience strongly preferred.
Exceptional writing, research, and analytics skills.
Knowledge of R (or comparable statistical environment) strongly preferred.
Strong technical and technology skills.
Team mindset, and project management skills.
Strong presence and communication abilities.
Litigation/courtroom experience.
