Director Online Engagement Amnesty International USA Washington

The Director of Online Engagement is responsible for using email, social media, and emerging online tools to advance AIUSA’s programmatic and organizational goals. The Director builds and leverages AIUSA’s online constituent base to support programs, campaigns, and initiatives to protect human rights and strengthen AIUSA’s long-term power to advocate for human rights protections in the U.S. and around the world. Specifically, the Director oversees AIUSA’s social media, email engagement, and production staff, and works in close partnership with the Web and Media teams.
As a member of the leadership team within the Digital and Strategic Communications department, the Director of Online Engagement helps shape and drive the organization’s broader communications strategies. The Director of Online Engagement reports to the Deputy Executive Director for Strategic Communications and Digital Initiatives, and supervises several staff members and consultants.
Responsibilities
Develops innovative, creative, and effective strategies and plans for engaging AIUSA’s online constituency in campaigns and initiatives; oversees implementation of those strategies and plans, tracks and reports progress, and identifies recommendations for future efforts.
Manages social media, email engagement, and production staff. Engages staff in developing strategies and plans. Guides and supports staff to meet and exceed goals.
Collaborates with program staff, member leaders, and others within the organization to ensure that online engagement efforts align with and support AIUSA’s priorities and goals.
Collaborates with Development and Membership departments to ensure that online engagement efforts align with and support organizational goals for retention and growth.
Manages annual budget with supervisor’s oversight and in close collaboration with Finance staff.
Manages relationships with paid vendors, and works closely with Deputy Executive Director to identify and cultivate pro bono relationships with firms.
Develops regular systems for tracking and analyzing data, and regularly shares reports and insights based on data.
Contributes to broader strategic planning and project planning discussions, bringing a comprehensive communications perspective (including online engagement as well as media, web, constituency communications, etc).
Regularly represents organization with external coalitions and audiences.
Demonstrates a thorough working knowledge of policies, procedures, and terminology of the department/field.
Creates processes, procedures, forms and/or rules necessary for work completion, efficient workflow and/or service delivery.
Exercises considerable latitude in making decisions in the application of a body of policies, precedents and guidelines.
Participates in shared responsibility and collaboration with the volunteer and internal and external constituents.
Requirements
Education and Experience:
BA/BS and at least 10 years relevant experience or MA/MS and 8 years relevant experience and/or sufficient relevant work experience.
Substantial experience developing and overseeing execution of digital strategies, including multi-platform campaigns that engage large numbers of people through social media, email, and new technology.
Substantial experience blending storytelling and advocacy across digital channels, to educate popular audiences about complex issues, deepen their connection to the organization, and engage them in advocacy.
Experience developing and executing both short-term, rapid-response digital campaigns and longer-lead, sustained campaigns.
Experience setting clear goals for online engagement, measuring progress, and reporting results in concrete terms.
Substantial technical knowledge of area of work.
Experience managing and supervising staff, as well as managing unit budget and vendors.
Experience in contract negotiations, budgeting and revenue projections.
Experience balancing competing priorities and needs, with a client-service/partnership orientation and a diplomatic approach.
Nonprofit experience preferred.
Skills:
Demonstrated ability to develop and execute online engagement campaign and programs connected to broader organizational goals.
Demonstrated ability to drive long-term strategies and plans forward while also managing rapid-response work and turning unexpected events into opportunities.
Demonstrated ability to integrate online vehicles into broader campaigns successfully.
Excellent management skills, including proven ability to lead teams of staff to generate innovative, creative ideas to advance existing goals.

Excellent organizational and planning skills.
Extensive knowledge and skill in analyzing data to optimize performance.
Skill in presenting information orally in a logical and clear manner to explain programs, projects or activities to both internal and external audiences.
Knowledge of and skill using HTML, social media, open source CMS, CRM, blog platforms, SEO, web metrics software, multimedia editors such as FinalCut and Photoshop as well as a general technical proficiency.
Ability to turn concepts and ideas into reality quickly and with limited resources (both human and financial).
Diplomatic, collegial approach to engage with other staff, volunteer leaders, and members as partners and to identify solutions that meet multiple stakeholders’ needs.
