Director Engineering Technology Harvard University Boston

Job Description:
Reporting to the Chief of Informatics Technology, the Director of Informatics Engineering and Technology will both oversee all engineering staff and oversee the technology (systems and tools) used by the team. The director will be a member of the Harvard Catalyst Informatics Leadership team. The leadership team oversees all informatics activities and projects, including several high profile projects of national scope (https://open.med.harvard.edu/). Working with this team they will help set strategic vision for the informatics group and ensure that we are executing effectively.

They will work closely with the other directors in order to develop a shared vision and leadership approach for the group, including: organization, technologies and practices to meet our present and future needs. Leadership strategies and approaches will necessarily need to be adaptive to the varying needs of our many projects and shared service groups (e.g. QA). The director will work with existing engineering supervisors, managers and staff in order to develop comprehensive career paths for technical staff, identify and implement new skill training approaches and implement best practices for managing staff performance. The focus will be on maximizing the effectiveness of our engineering team to meet the needs of our many complex and challenging projects. The director will work with the leadership team in order to synthesize our long-term strategic needs and ensure that the engineering team is optimized for execution and well suited to meet future challenges. The director will also oversee our infrastructure and operations team and will be responsible for key technologies used by the team. These technologies include: software development platforms, identity management tools/standards, data security architectures, testing environments/tools, software deployment tools, system environments/services and operational hosting. The director will bring deep understanding of our engineering and technology capabilities, skills and assets into the ongoing activities of the leadership team. The director will align our technologies with our strategic plan and make sure that we are implementing best practices for adoption of new technologies and retirement of old technologies. The director will also coordinate with groups and organizations outside of our team in order to learn about relevant advances in related areas and to develop important collaborations. This may include the following groups: Harvard Medical School IT/Information Security, Harvard University IT/Information Security, affiliated academic healthcare center IT/Information Security, NIH CTSA informatics working groups and open source community collaborations. Additional QualificationsMS in Informatics, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline is desired. The ideal candidate will have experience in a variety of informatics areas including: web application development, multi-tier architectures, data management systems, content management systems, Java, Ruby on Rails, semantic technologies, iterative project management models, infrastructure automation, configuration management, virtualization, cloud architectures and design of systems for high levels of data security. Ideal candidates will have at least 10 years of software and/or technology development experience in multi-tier environments. The ideal candidate will have experience developing innovative systems in academic research environments and at least 7 years of experience in developing and applying best practices for rapid development, efficient ongoing operations and periodic technology refactoring. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years experience in managing engineering teams.
