Senior Director Environmental Health Safety American Standard Brands Piscataway

Job Description:
This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with all applicable federal state and local environmental health and safety laws standards regulations and requirements for the Operations in the US, Mexico & Canada. Reporting to the Chief Supply Chain Officer, the Senior Director of EHS develops necessary programs, procedures and policies for ensuring compliance and loss prevention so as to ensure losses and risk to the Operations are minimized.

Responsibilites
Develops and implements environmental health & safety compliance programs and policies including OSHAS 14001 and ISO 18001 as well as coordinate and/or deliver training for all Operations facilities and their applicable staff.


Provides technical direction and guidance to plant managers and all facility-level EHS staff and other key staff regarding compliance for all workplace conditions/hazards as well as all air water and waste requirements and regulations that apply to their facilities/operations.
Measures, analyzes, evaluates, reports and communicates loss control and accident information to senior management. Develops and implements accident prevention and loss control methods and programs at Operations facilities to improve safety performance.
Assists in accident investigations, reviews and approves reports. Ensures proper root cause analysis is conducted and that necessary corrective actions are implemented to prevent recurrence of a similar incident anywhere in the organization
Ensure facility readiness for inspections by regulatory agencies.
Directs all environmental permitting activities; including program permits (surface, groundwater and storm water and air use permits). Ensures all necessary environmental reports for facilities including reports air pollution, wastewater, hazardous waste reports and other state-required reports are prepared and filed as required
Directs all relationships and communications with all regulatory agencies. Negotiates all enforcement actions notices of violation informal settlement agreements administrative orders and permit agreements with local state and federal governmental environmental agencies.
Represents the company on all contested regulatory agency citation matters. Identifies develops and implements economically feasible solutions to environmental health & safety issues/problems for the manufacturing facilities.
Coordinates loss control programs, risk engineering and fire protection planning for Operations facilities and with the company's insurance providers.
Assess the impact of environmental health & safety laws and regulations as they affect the company and its operations.
Track regulations as they develop.
Formulate and implement policies procedures and programs for compliance. Directs environmental due diligence for mergers and acquisitions joint ventures divestitures site expansions and/or redevelopments.
Conducts environmental site assessments with environmental engineering consultants (Phase I & II).
Negotiates satisfactory environmental protections and terms in real estate transaction and purchase agreements.
Advises senior management on the compliance status costs and technical improvements needed to achieve compliance.
Defines annual budget for environment, health and safety management, e.g. capital expenditures, PPE, audits, training, etc. Works closely with Plant EHS Managers and key staff to anticipate facility needs.
Manages all hazardous and solid waste activities for the company including the approval and auditing of all Treatment Storage and Disposal facilities.
Develops and implements facility-level environmental health & safety auditing and/or inspection programs for all Operations facilities.
Contracts with appropriate environmental health & safety analyst hygienists, consultants, engineers and suppliers and direct their activities related to the environmental health & safety needs of Operations.
Directs the activities of outside and in-house attorneys representing the company to ensure adequate legal advice is provided to the company regarding environmental health & safety matters.
Provides senior management with summary briefings and strategic guidance on the company's liability exposures as a potentially responsible party (PRP) in relation to such sites.
Participates in appropriate trade associations to promote the company’s position in a prominent manner.
Provides assistance with the company's participation in regulatory rulemaking and negotiation processes through such associations where such efforts involve and/or affect the company's products and manufacturing processes.
Manages trains and develops subordinates ensuring a high level of technical proficiency.
Responsible to conduct and ensure his subordinates conducting themselves in a manner consistent with company mission, values, code of ethics, policies and other standards of conduct.


Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or higher preferred in engineering, business or a related field. Safety & Health Certifications or equivalent experience required.
Minimum of 8 years of related experience required.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports, governmental regulations, laws and legal documents.
Ability to comprehend highly technical biological, chemical, physical, engineering and other such information.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions (sound understanding of the scientific method).
Possess advanced mathematical and statistical skills and abilities.
Good communication skills including a high level of competency in writing and speaking skills. Spanish language skills are preferred.
