Job Description:
The Director of Technical Services is a full-time, 12 month, MPP (Management Personnel Plan) position and reports directly to the Associate Vice President of Information Technology, CIO.
The Director of Technical Services plans, directs, and organizes the day-to-day operations and oversight of projects for the Technical Services unit; consisting of both the Technology Services and Client Services departments of the Office of Information Technology.
The Director of Technical Services is responsible for the management of activities and supervision of staff engaged in technical support and services of end-user technology (computers, projectors, tablets, etc.), technology training, communication outreach to the campus community, and infrastructure support for all network related systems within the university, including: voice, video and data network design, installation, and administration, cable plant installation and maintenance, data center operations, server operating system installation and maintenance, backup systems, and identity management and e-mail administration. Technical Services serves as the primary contact point for all IT related services and support requests fulfilled by OIT.

The Director of Technical Services prepares technical information for use by the university community using language appropriate to a non-technical audience and published in web and print-based formats, and is also responsible for maintaining all content on the OIT web site for Technical Services. The incumbent will maintain performance metrics to document service level achievements for OIT functions and will administer the work order system used to record, assign, and document all work requests.

The Director of Technical Services is responsible for developing and maintaining working relationships with technical support staff working outside of OIT to ensure they are informed about campus technology policies and procedures as well as insuring their technology support needs are addressed. The incumbent is also responsible for developing and managing a training program in current technical topics for university staff. The incumbent is expected to work under minimal supervision.

At the direction of the AVP of Information Technology, the Director of Technical Services may also engage in special projects and research for new technologies being promoted by the Office of the Chancellor of the CSU, or being requested locally related to the Director’s area of responsibility.

To effectively carry out these tasks, the Director of Technical Services will interface with various individuals/departments on campus, as well as individuals at the Office of the Chancellor of the CSU, other campuses within the CSU, and external entities, agencies, and individuals, as appropriate.

Salary Range: Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. This is a 12-month, full-time, CSU Management Personnel Plan (MPP) position with an excellent benefits package. Desired Skills and Experience
Qualifications and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a technology related major (CS, MIS, CIS, etc.), excellent technical, research, analytical and writing skills; expertise in developing interactive and dynamic presentations; the ability to synthesize complex issues for both expert and non-expert audiences; and strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

The successful candidate must have the equivalent to six years of progressively responsible professional technical experience in an Information Technology department (preferably in an education setting) including at least four years of supervisory experience; substantial technical expertise with a variety of hardware and software systems, desktop technologies, computer platforms, network infrastructure, operating system software, and VoIP telephony; ability to stay calm and focused in difficult situations; be able to conduct group meetings; prepare clear and understandable reports and/or presentations; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with individuals/groups contacted in the course of work (both internal and external to the university).
