Job Description:
The Director of Talent Management & Strategy is a seasoned talent executive who will act as the primary liaison between network on-air talent, their representatives and DCI businesses, including production, ad sales, marketing, digital, commerce, education, distribution, Discovery international, business affairs/legal to ensure business priority access to talent, manage contractual compliance, trouble shoot talent issues and leverage talent and deals in order to support content, events and network and corporate business initiatives that drive ratings and revenue with a focus towards the business of developing network talent including building, maintaining and maximizing talent brands worldwide.
Responsibilities
Act as a point person and strategic counsel to the network key executives and external producers in connection with talent management, talent business strategy, and issue resolution.
Actively engage the talent very early on and build and maintain personal and business relationships with network talent, providing them with on-going guidance and mentorship. Be aware of and appropriately acknowledge milestones in the talents' personal and professional lives. Understand the talent inside and out - deal terms, personalities, interests, likes, dislikes, skills, expertise, etc., and apply such knowledge to successfully execute responsibilities.
Work closely with and build relationships with relevant internal (e.g., network EPs) and external parties (e.g., production companies, talent representatives) to ensure a 360 degree talent management strategy.
Manage and troubleshoot potential talent crisis, including personality driven concerns and contractual situations, before, during and after a talent crisis to protect relationships with talent/representatives and Network's/DCI business units' interests.
Accompany and manage talent at DCI related activities and events such as Upfront, Corporate events, and network marketing shoots.
Screen, counsel and provide direction for all talent related requests both internal and external while understanding and assessing competing business priorities to leverage access to talent globally.
Work in a matrixed fashion with SVP of Talent Relations, the talent, the network and DCL business units such as ad sales, communications, commerce, DNI, education, and marketing to develop a business plan to manage and maximize the talent brand.
Manage talents' schedules comprehensively across DCI to ensure deliverables and key business strategies are achieved.
Work with Talent Relations Business and Legal Affairs to interpret contracts and advise internal clients and external producers on compliance.
Work with talent to seek out major third party opportunities that compliment and/or enhance DCI’s internal commerce or ad sales initiatives.
Identify and recommend specific short and long term business strategies and opportunities for talent that match network’s interests to maximize talent contracts, effectively utilize resources, and increase profile of talent while driving ratings and revenue.
Secure talent’s buy-in on such strategies/opportunities and manage approach to talent to guarantee contractual compliance, manage expectations, and ensure successful execution of plans.
Requirements
A minimum of 5 years of experience in the entertainment industry
A proven successful track record managing high level on-air talent
Willingness to travel up to 75% of the time
Thorough knowledge of all areas of the on-air talent business, including an extensive knowledge of talent contractual terms
A proven ability to exemplify calmness and composure while handling talent in a crisis situation
Bachelor's degree and excellent verbal and written communications
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a very high-volume workload
Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to take the initiative, be strategic, make firm decisions, and offer a high level of customer service
Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Work, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) required
