Director Discovery Medicine Respiratory GSK Philadelphia

Job Description:
In an effort to provide greater alignment between traditional drug discovery and clinical science GSK has closely integrated early clinical development led by Discovery Medicine (DM) with the biology and chemistry groups within the Discovery Performance Units (DPUs). The DPUs are responsible for a portfolio of potential new medicines from target to clinical proof of concept, and in the Respiratory Therapeutic Area (TA) their portfolios cover a range of respiratory indications including: asthma, COPD, acute lung injury (ALI) and interstitial lung diseases. The DM group interacts closely with the DPUs and participates in all aspects of drug discovery but with a particular accountability to develop and execute a translational strategy around a disease and/or drug compound. This includes the development of novel tools and methodologies (including biomarkers) to evaluate pharmacology in early clinical testing, define the target disease population, and via the design and execution of studies in man, demonstrate clinical proof of concept for compounds in development.

The candidate must have a strong, relevant clinical and scientific background in respiratory and/or critical care medicine and exceptional team skills. Both scientific and clinical expertise is required to independently generate scientific hypotheses to meet objectives. Team skills are necessary to obtain internal support for scientific programs and also to bring together diverse groups inside and outside GSK to maximum effect.

GSK offers a wide range of opportunities for translational physicians to work alongside expert senior colleagues, helping to develop what is widely considered to be the most diverse and innovative portfolio in the Industry. The expected novelty in design and execution of development programs allows clinical and scientific skills to be fully utilized.

DM physicians will also be responsible for clinical standards and medical governance. They will sit on project teams and clinical matrix teams and will be expected to have or develop the expertise to lead such teams going forward. It is not expected the position will require significant line management responsibilities, in the first instance, but there are a wide range of future development opportunities that might entail line responsibilities.

For applicants currently working in the NHS/academia, there can be flexibility on working patterns between GSK and a continuing external role, particularly while candidates are in transition. Joint appointments may also be considered
