Job Description:
USC’s Keck School of Medicine, Department of Norris Development, is seeking a Director of Development with experience in medical fundraising to join its team. This position will help direct fund raising for the Norris Cancer Fund; building a program that increases unrestricted revenue for USC Norris and creates a pipeline of major and planned gift prospects. The Director will also support fund raising for other significant priorities within USC Norris including physicians involved with cancer research and clinical care, and in collaboration with other Norris Development team members.
The Director of Development will be responsible for the strategic direction and creation of the Norris Cancer Fund with the goal of raising significant unrestricted funds for USC Norris. Reporting to the Senior Executive Director of Development, the Director will develop and maintain a portfolio of 175-200 new, renewed and upgraded Norris Cancer Fund donors.
The Director will create individualized cultivation, solicitation and stewardship plans leading to the successful solicitation of annual gifts starting at the Leadership Circle ($1,000-$2,499) on through the higher annual giving levels ($5,000 -$25,000+) resulting in a unrestricted revenue stream of $2,000,000 – $3,000,000 per fiscal year for Norris.
The Director will also carry a major and planned gift portfolio based on clinical assignments. This portfolio will be created through donors discovered or engaged through the Annual Fund. The Director will establish a pipeline of major and planned gift prospects, and work in collaboration with the other Norris Development team members to qualify and cultivate these donors towards major and planned gifts.
The Director will create volunteer and stewardship programs for existing and new Norris Cancer Fund donors. The successful candidate will engage leadership donors in volunteer leadership roles that will increase the Norris Cancer Fund’s visibility in the community and will develop, motivate and grow a volunteer effort to help reach funding and membership goals. The Director will manage the stewardship and recognition of donors to the Norris Cancer Fund.
The successful candidate will develop collegial relationships with partner colleagues in Development across the Keck School of Medicine of USC , the Norris Hospital and the Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, in order to increase donor involvement and philanthropy to USC .
He/She will also be responsible for coordinating and managing special events for he Norris Cancer Fund, and other special projects in support of unrestricted funding priorities as determined by the Director of the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Position manages fundraising for above priorities of the University through identification, cultivation and solicitation of alumni and other individual donors, corporations and foundations, and/or government agencies.
• Manages day-to-day fundraising operation for a school or department of the University. Participates in the development of fundraising goals, policies and short and long-term strategies.
• Identifies, cultivates and solicits prospects towards $2,000,000-$3,000,000 annual goal.
• Oversees volunteers and support groups and respective fundraising efforts, activities and/or events. Ensures events and activities are planned and implemented efficiently. Provides leadership guidance to volunteers who assist in the identification, cultivation and solicitation of major prospects.
• Writes proposals for presentation to individual prospects, foundations and corporations.
• Participates in the development of school or department fiscal year operating budget. Develops and manages program or event budget.
• Develops or participates in development and management of donor relations and prospect management systems, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
• Oversees public relations program(s), such as interacting with USC News Service. Coordinates interviews, press releases and announcements.
• Develops and coordinates production of fundraising and marketing materials. Liaises with University Public Relations Office to ensure goals of school or department are effectively represented to public.
• Prepares annual development reports assessing progress toward achievement of goals. Analyzes information to identify trends and patterns, evaluates strategies and makes recommendations.
• Represents the school or department at professional and University meetings, seminars and conferences for professional development. Communicates goals and priorities of school or University to various professional communities.
• Supervises assigned staff. Interviews, hires, and trains research staff. Schedules and delegates workload. Evaluates performance and provides guidance and feedback.
• Develops and implements security related procedures such as office opening and closing routines, recognition of duress signals and key controls. Coordinates security activities with University Public Safety Department. Promotes and maintains standards for security conscious awareness and behavior. Maintains knowledge of University’s crime prevention and suppression programs and services. Ensures dissemination of security related information to staff.
