Duties & Responsibilities
Reporting to the editor in chief, the executive editor for digital publishing shall be responsible for all of HHP’s editorial content in digital form, including, but not limited to, video, podcasts, weblogs (blogs), interactive online features, advanced graphics, discussion forums, apps, and webinars/webcasts, and for oversight and management of HHP’s existing and developing digital strategy. This position will serve as the subject matter expert for digital solutions and emerging digital channels and products, collaborating with HHP senior management, staff, business and software development partners, including existing strategic partner,
Belvoir Media Group, to ensure digital experience optimization. S/he shall oversee the creation of new digital publications and related operations to meet defined experience goals and requirements. S/he shall manage the process of creating content for all digital and print products, overseeing all elements of the work process, assigning work to writers, editors and faculty based on market demands and tracking project progress. This includes retaining key editorial contact with Belvoir Media Group for existing print products and oversight of all editorial and development work required for Special Health Reports and Newsletters published in partnership with Belvoir. S/he shall coordinate content with HMS faculty advisors and reviewers and ensure both print and digital projects are completed on schedule and that project requirements are fulfilled. This position shall ensure consistency across all HHP publishing efforts and that content is up-to-date and presented effectively.
Working with the editor in chief and managing director for business strategy and business development, the executive editor shall also assist in creating, vetting and financially modeling new digital publishing initiatives and related plans for review by institutional leadership. The successful candidate must bring an entrepreneurial outlook to the creation of new consumer-directed publishing initiatives and will provide leadership and inspiration to his/her editorial team and staff. S/he must understand and be loyal to the mission of Harvard Medical School in helping to set a strategy that builds upon and complements the School’s core values and embraces innovation. This position shall manage three existing direct reports and a growing writer, editor, reviewer and multimedia team engaged in print and digital content creation. Additional QualificationsMaster's degree preferred. Publishing in the health sector preferred. 7+ years or experience in digital publishing preferred. The ideal candidate will have experience working with medical faculty and supervising editorial and production staff. Superior verbal and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills, including impeccable digital writing and editing skills with a sharp eye for proofreading and grammar. Ability to write effectively to a consumer audience and ability to be a team player while still working autonomously. Must have a deep knowledge of SEO tactics, use of CMS, and advanced web analytics. Social media savvy a must with the skills and understanding to effectively engage existing and new target audiences of consumer health information.
