Senior Director - Planned Giving - National Geographic - Washington
Job description
The Senior Director of Planned Giving will report directly to and take assignments from the Vice President, Individual Giving. The Senior Director will lead the strategy and implementation for the Planned Giving team, managing five professionals and working aggressively to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individuals with the interest and ability to make planned gifts. In addition to management responsibilities the Senior Director will maintain a national portfolio of 50-60 highly qualified donors and donor candidates.
The Senior Director's ideal portfolio will hold gifts of high complexity (CRUTs, CRATs, Lead Trusts, and Real Estate) and high yield (7-plus figure capacity). The Senior Director will serve as the in-house expert in the technical knowledge of gift planning responsible for training other members of the planned giving and development team as necessary in the successful use of planned and specifically complex giving vehicles. Responsibilities
The Senior Director will actively manage a growing pool of planned giving donors and donor candidates with 7-plus figure capacity. S/he will provide outstanding stewardship that inspires repeat gifts from current donors. S/he will stimulate new gifts by providing exemplary customer service and cultivation. The Sr. Director will qualify donor candidates to determine potential/interest and manage the development and implementation of highly personalized individual gift strategies. The Senior Director will be responsible for achieving personal production goals. (40%)
The Senior Director will oversee the productivity of the planned giving team, including establishing and tracking individual performance metrics for front-line professionals assigning and adjusting the team's portfolio as needed, and ensuring the timely production and effectiveness tracking of planned giving communications and stewardship. The Senior Director and team members will work efficiently across the individual giving team to ensure proper coordination of effort for shared prospects or to assist in developing complex legacy gift strategies for individuals using a donor-centric approach. Works closely with the Senior Vice President and Vice President in strategic and operational planning, goal setting, budgeting, reporting, preparation of briefing materials, tracking, and other duties as assigned. (20%)
The Senior Director will play a key role in conveying the technical knowledge of planned giving vehicles to members of the planned giving unit and the department in general. Training may be one-on-one, but can also be more formalized if necessary. In addition the Senior Director will serve as a primary interface with other internal departments such as the finance and legal teams on technical issues and gift documentation related to planned giving. (10%)
Minimum Education Required
Bachelor's degree.
Minimum Years and Type of Experience
-9 years of demonstrated success in planned giving in an organization with a comprehensive program. Demonstrated ability to build lasting relationships with donors and successful record of closing gifts 6 and 7-figure gifts. Thorough understanding of planned giving vehicles and associated legal and tax implications.
Knowledge And Skills Required
Advanced knowledge of planned giving and proven track record of closing complex gifts, including gifts of real estate. Ability to work as a team player and willingness to learn new skills to help advance NGS planned giving efforts. Exceptional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Must be detail and deadline oriented. Ability and willingness to travel frequently. Experience with Raiser's Edge and PG Calc preferred.
