ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reporting to the Managing Director of Development, the Director of Development will be responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of $1-3+ million in gifts annually in support of the The World Is Waiting: The Campaign for Harvard Medicine with a focus on the Campaign’s “Service” priority areas, including Primary Care and Health Care Policy.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director will be responsible for fundraising with individuals; s/he will serve as a key member of the principal and major gifts team by developing an annual Major/Principal Gifts operating plan for the focus areas; leading the cultivation and solicitation of individuals for gifts of $100,000+ with a concentration on $1,000,000+ gifts; and closing $3 million+ in gifts annually. The Director will build and manage a portfolio of 50-100 prospects that have a capacity to give $100,000+ with a concentration on donors who can make gifts in excess of $1,000,000+. In addition, the Director will work with an experienced advancement team to identify prospects, execute timely and comprehensive stewardship strategies, develop and manage related events, and assist with strategic planning. Other responsibilities include preparation of proposals and documents related to fundraising opportunities. The Director will be required to meet quarterly and annual fundraising goals, while working with selected faculty members to accomplish goals; recommend new strategies to enhance fundraising; prepare progress reports on principal/major gifts fundraising activities; provide principal gift tracking data to the Senior Director of Development, Principal and Major Gifts. Finally, the Director will represent HMS at events, meetings, and off-site presentations and will engage in extensive travel to meet with prospects and donors. Other projects as identified.
Additional QualificationsDemonstrated success in personally cultivating, soliciting, closing, and stewarding major gifts from individuals. Superior written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational and managerial capabilities, ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks. Possess an entrepreneurial skill set to identify and engage high net worth individuals within and outside of the Harvard community. Must be able to communicate academic content effectively to donors. Experience in supporting science or academic medical center preferred Public speaking experience necessary along with the ability to communicate and work with people at all levels. Track record of successful proposal preparation. Must exercise significant judgment and confidentiality in working with prospects, volunteers, and HMS staff. Some travel and evening and weekend work required.
