Director - Accounting and CRA Specialty Support - American Express - Salt Lake City
Job description
The Director, Accounting and CRA Specialty Support within U.S. Banking Controllership will report directly to the Vice President, Controller – U.S. Banking. This individual will lead a team of professionals responsible for monthly and quarterly accounting activities for the Banks (AECB, FSB, and American Express Banking Corp.) and will build relationships and partner with other subject matter experts to manage key areas impacting the Banks, including but not limited to Asset Backed Securitizations, credit loss reserves, Tax, and Membership Rewards. This position will also enhance and build out accounting processes in support of the Banks’ growing investment in affordable housing projects required by the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA).
Other Key Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To
• Serve as primary day to day Bank contact with the Regulators, Internal Audit, and PwC on matters pertaining to the Banks’ financial results and legal entity books and records
• Manage financial submissions critical and necessary for American Express Company consolidated reporting
• Ensure compliance with Company Finance and Accounting policies and partner with other subject matter experts to manage implementation of new and/or revised accounting standards (e.g. new Revenue Recognition Standard) at the Bank legal entity level
• Work with the CRA team to structure new contracts and investments and manage monthly accounting for CRA loans and investments
• Oversee the accounting for other Bank specialty products (e.g., non-card loans)
• Support the development of strong working relationships and communication with key business partners and senior leaders
• Support/lead special projects to drive process enhancements and automation initiatives
• Drive employee engagement, provide career development opportunities, and support work/life balance initiatives for Controllership team members

Required Qualifications
• 7 plus years experience in Accounting / Auditing / Financial Reporting
• Strong understanding of Regulatory, US GAAP, and SEC reporting and accounting guidelines
• A self starter, proactive team player with a passion to consistently deliver high quality service and exceed customers’ expectations
• Ability to lead, coach, develop and promote talent
• Ability to understand a Company’s businesses, processes and unique internal financial reporting systems and operations
• A quick learner with superior problem solving skills. Focused on generating efficiencies and continuous process improvements
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, drive projects, improve processes, and work well under time-pressured deadlines
• Demonstrated willingness to take initiative and act decisively
• Strong written/oral communication, relationship building, presentation and collaboration skills
• Proven ability to effectively interact with all levels and stakeholders of an organization including senior leaders/officers, Board members, as well as with external regulators and auditors
Education Requirement
• Undergraduate degree in Finance or Accounting
Preferred Additional
• Graduate degree and/or CPA a plus
• Project management experience preferred
• Experience working in financial services or other highly regulated environment preferred
