Senior Director - Learn Platform Engineering - Blackboard - San Francisco

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

This person is expected to manage the day to day activities of Learn’s Engineering team. This team is responsible for providing building out the end user functionality for the world’s leading LMS. Most of the effort will focus on building out a modern Single Page App, while also maintaining and occasionally extending Learn’s existing “Classic” user interface. This position requires an individual who blends an appreciation and understanding of fundamental cloud architectures, a passion for building a great user experience, a laser focus on quality, while recruiting, motivating & coaching a world class, distributed, team of software architects and engineers.


Responsibilities

The Senior Director of Learn Engineering is a key role for the success of present and future technology initiatives. Specifically s/he will be responsible to:
Recruit, mentor, organize, motivate and coach a team of software engineering professionals. Assign projects and arrange training to advance the career of each individual within the team. Define and monitor goals.
Create an environment where the team enjoys working together by organizing team events, meetings, hack-a-thons and other creative activities.
Identify and coach future PD leaders to take on additional personnel and technical responsibility.
Be an advocate for agile development methodologies while delivering on all committed projects. Use metrics to measure and improve overall team productivity.
Provide timely and transparent written status reports that highlight both successes and challenges.
Collaborate with other members of Learn’s Product Development staff to develop a true sense of shared responsibility & energy for the entire product, from conception thru deployment.
Identify architectural, engineering, quality, process and management skill gaps on the team. Develop and implement a plan of continual improvement.
Identify weaker performers, develop a performance plan and take any necessary actions to improve the overall capability of the team.
Work with Product Management and Design to negotiate and offer alternatives on risky/complex/expensive requirements and negotiate priorities and timelines
Enable the collaboration between team members and others across PD in an effort to best leverage the skills and knowledge of all engineers in PD.
Participate in technical M&A due diligence.
Build and nurture contacts throughout the organization.
Expect to be traveling approximately once / month, usually to Blackboard Product Development offices.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
The person in this role must be comfortable with complex software development projects and be an innovative thinker capable of communicating multifaceted technical concepts. The candidate must have a track record of achieving goals and meeting deadlines on multi-team projects, and the ability to work in an aggressive, fast paced environment with evolving requirements..

Required Skills
A minimum of 15 years hands-on experience on developing, testing, supporting and managing commercial software products.
A minimum of 8 years’ experience managing multiple teams of software professionals creating many releases of software products using one or more standard project management techniques.
Proven track record of recruiting and coaching successful teams of software engineers.
Demonstrated leadership skills, communication, analytical and problem solving skills, as well as short and long term planning skills
A minimum of 5 years’ experience working with international and distributed teams
Broad and deep familiarity with Agile development practices.
Proven track record developing and/or testing very robust software products as an individual contributor and leader.
Proven track record for development and deploying resilient cloud services on AWS or similar infrastructure.
Demonstrated ability to educate and influence senior management.
