Job description
The Director - Trade Compliance and Logistics is responsible for driving Sharp Americas Corporate Trade Compliance and initiatives and for execution of process improvement and cost savings programs for SEC business units in the area of international logistics. Primary responsibility includes ensuring trade compliance prgrams are in place, risks of non compliance are mitigated, and compliance is audited for Sharp Americas.


Use measurement skills to design solutions and implementation with clear outlined goals.
Develop plans to maintain and control compliance, cost reduction and logistics projects.
Develop and manage ongoing process to identify and analyze emergent risks and impact to global trade compliance for Sharp Americas.
Responsible for providing leadership to direct and indirect reports throughout Sharp Americas within the functions of Trade Compliance and International Logistics; provide leadership or support per specific Sharp America business group.
Responsible for corporate trade compliance with Customs, BIS, ITAR, EAR, OGA. Continue to serve as liaison and empowered official for trade compliance and government inquiries.
Establish the strategic direction for import and export trade compliance and international logistics management including trade infrastructure & training. Partner with Sharp Americas leadership and stakeholders to coordinate, oversee and support these efforts.
Research, analyze and interpret U.S. international trade regulations and laws (including ITAR, EAR, OFAC, and Customs) for hardware and technology transfer and in determining their effect on Sharp’s operations.
Ensure trade compliance policies and business SOP’s are maintained, and effectively implemented to support corporate supply chain requirements, regulations, and polices.
Mitigate risks associated with import/export operations and identify and manage compliant cost-saving global trade programs and government trade initiatives.
Direct companywide audits including: ISA (Import Self-Assessment), ISF (Importer Security Filing), C-TPAT (Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism), Export ECCN determinations, Export license use, Deemed export, Denied Party Screening.
Determines areas of non-compliance, evaluates risk and recommends corrective actions.
Responsible and manage cost savings with compliance initiatives of reclassification of materials, drawback program, Bonded Warehouse program and Foreign Trade Zone programs in line with Regulations and membership use. Propose solutions further such as First Sale Transactions (cost savings).
Proactively manage ruling requests, voluntary disclosures and other government agency filings and inquiries for cost savings within compliant activity.
Manage item master data for harmonized tariff code compliance and ECCN compliance when introduced.
Responsible to review regional Sharp group office material HTS tariff classifications and to support cross-functional local teams to optimize compliance and duty savings.
Review technical data on materials for export to assess technical content and make appropriate ECCN determination and export license determination; Prepare export license applications and authorizations.
Review and implement a Global Trade Solutions system into SAP for SAP transactions and manual/ mailroom entered shipments
Maintain and .Update Company’s Export Compliance Manual, Control Procedures, etc.
Provide day-to-day assistance to business units on import and export trade compliance.
Work with forwarders and brokers to ensure that export documentation (e.g. shipping export declarations, AES transmissions, etc…) are properly completed and maintained.
Subject matter expert in Customs classification, valuation, free trade agreement use and qualification, country of origin, duty reduction programs (Foreign Trade Zone, Bonded Warehouse, Drawback) and Customs rules and regulations.
Develops process, manages and reviews dutiable Customs matters (i.e. assists, royalties, commissions) as applicable; compliance and cost reduction - Reviews all information on assists supported by finance team and determines the dutiable value as applied toward future importations.
Conduct logistics cost savings analysis and develop cost reductions programs.
Participate in yearly ocean carrier bid with SC; secure cost savings and operating efficiencies.
Manage import and export processes, including rates, service levels, and compliance.
Review and advise Sharp American groups of Free Trade Agreement or other opportunities with origin countries and advises compliant methods to save in duty payments. (ie KR FTA).
Manages US reconciliation entry process and responsible for SEMA and SSG quarterly oversight. Over 5,000 Customs Entries per year.
Monitor Mexico’s maquiladora IMMEX with Compliance manager in SEMEX Mexico, assuring proper documentation, HS codes, NAFTA use, RVC and Rule of Origin testing.
Review Process and Customs entries for completeness, and in compliance. Work with Sharp USA groups and Customs brokers in identifying proper classification through our Sharp USA Tariff Classification system. Over 10,000 Customs Entries per year.
Collaborate with Sharp USA trade compliance personnel in Americas and Japan.
Work closely with Sharp personnel, engineers, design, and more to make appropriate import tariff number and export classification and license determinations.
Provide trade compliance training to key personnel involved in international trade.
Coordinate with Legal Department on investigations and disclosures of incidents of potential non-compliance or request for information and product verification inquiries.
Provide assistance to all Sharp Americas groups and Compliance and Ethics Officer for trade relations risks to the corporation, including intellectual property rights, foreign OEM suppliers and key risks to the corporation.
Special projects and assignments as needed.


Possess a college degree. BS in Business or Logistics fields or compliance certification a plus.
Licensed US Customs Broker a plus.
Knowledge of US, Canada, Mexico, and Latin America Customs regulations, Foreign Trade Regulations, tariff classification, and free trade regulations.
Knowledge of Compliance in areas of Import, Export, Maquiladora, Foreign Trade Zones, Bonded Warehouse, FDA, FCC, NRC and other government agencies.
Knowledge of Code of Federal Regulations and research resources.
10 - 15 years import/export compliance experience with international responsibilities.
Ability to research complex theories of law and outline possible solutions, recommend courses of action, including risks and benefits.
Good aptitude for detail work and analytical skills.
Knowledge of six sigma terms & methodology a plus.
Knowledge of SAP and global trade management software a plus.
Good working knowledge process mapping.
Able to handle fast-pace environment and on-demand requests required.
Past success working across global matrix organization.
Project management skills.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Proven ability to lead major, complex projects and execute timely and cost-effective.
Up to 10% domestic travel with a possibility of international travel.
