Director - Software Development Engineering - MetLife - Carolina


Job Description

ACE is a multi-year, strategic initiative to implement a new platform for a key line of business. Critical to the success of this initiative is conversion of the existing business from multiple legacy mainframe applications onto the ACE platform.

The Director - SDE is responsible for the design, development and implementation of ACE following the full systems development lifecycle (SDLC).


Job Summary
Manages planning, organizing and implementing multiple and complex multi-million dollar application development projects.
Develops high-level work plans, schedules, estimates, resource plans and budget.
Manages client relations to ensure that application delivery expectations are developed, managed, and met.
Directs, motivates, and develops staff. Identifies and addresses training and development needs of project managers and project teams.
Monitors project results for significant deviations; invokes contingency plans when necessary.
Partners closely with client to ensure that technology agenda is tied to business plans.
Develops vendor statements of work, deliverables and Service Level Agreements.
Responsible for monthly financial management and administrative activities.


Supervisory Responsibilities
Full people management responsibility, including hiring, promotions, performance and compensation management, training and development.
Ensures vendor performance and deliverables meet contract specifications.

Required Experience
5+ years of experience in leading large, complex initiatives.
7+ years of related work experience.
5+ years of project management experience.
5+ years of management experience.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field.


Preferred Experience
Advanced degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, MBA or related field preferred.
Previous experience in the Insurance and/or Financial Services industry preferred.
Experience in effectively leading or participating in matrixed IT teams.
Strong facilitation and team building skills.
Prior experience in coaching and mentoring team members.
Previous experience aligning resources with demand and delivering to aggressive deadlines without sacrificing quality or cost.
Demonstrated oral and written communication proficiency.
Demonstrated ability to establish relationships and build rapport in order to influence colleagues at all levels, uncover business issues and identify needs.
Demonstrated ability to present and communicate concisely and clearly with all levels of financial, non-financial, technical and executive audiences.

Travel: 15 – 20%
