Job Purpose
Use epidemiological methodology expertise to conduct observational, population-based research that contributes to the understanding of underlying diseases, as well as patient management and medication use.
Key Responsibilities
Leads delivery of portfolio of epidemiology strategies from Discovery through Life Cycle Management, interacting with aligned R&D Therapy Area Units and Commercial Franchise Leadership teams, Medicine Development Teams (MDTs) and Medicine Commercialization teams as required.
Depending On The Stage Of The Assets Supported, The Epidemiology Director May
Provide epidemiology expertise for disease understanding relevant to drug development: incidence, prevalence, risk factors, natural history course, geographic variation, treatment patterns, co-morbidities, co-medications, outcome measures, phenotypes, biomarkers, characterizing unmet needs.
Support clinical trial design and safety evaluation: protocol assessment, patient subgroups, background event rates, meta-analyses.
Develop, manage and deliver post-marketing surveillance activities: risk evaluation mitigation strategies, epidemiology studies for signal detection and inference, post-authorization safety studies of benefit:risk
Drives high quality epidemiology methodologies and execution of timely deliverables for the Therapy area, in collaboration with asset leads and scientists.
Provides advice and guidance for best practice in evidence generation strategies and methodologies, including enabling external scientific advice, ensuring appropriate protocol review committee’s advice sought and incorporated.
Drives epidemiology innovation across the Therapy area(s), informs ideas and options through effective engagement with external experts , methodology and policy forums, and by leveraging knowledge of the external environment, enabling more efficient evidence development and /or optimizing demonstration of differentiation for both discovery assets and later medicines in development.
Key Experience & Skills
PhD/Doctorate or MD with MPH in epidemiology.
Significant experience conducting pharmacoepidemiologic research, including methodological research.
Line management experience, specifically coaching and developing junior members of the group.
Self motivated with the ability to work independently to develop credibility with colleagues within and outside Epidemiology.
Demonstrated leadership and strategic excellence
Ability to resolve problems through resourceful use of information and contacts.
Ability to work well within a business-driven environment, establish cross-functional relationships, balance priorities and handle multiple tasks through good planning, project administration, and organisation skills.
Excellent communication skills to interact effectively in multi-disciplinary matrix teams and to influence global stakeholders and key opinion leaders.
Solid track record of epidemiologic and quantitative skills; critical appraisal of methodology across settings
Demonstrated managerial and scientific problem solving abilities. Ability to provide constructive feedback to direct reports or junior staff on methodological or team issues.
