Senior Director - Content Development - Public Broadcasting Service - Arlington
Job description
The Senior Director, Content Development is tasked with expanding the reach, scope and impact of PBS Digital Studios through strategic partnerships, talent deals, content acquisition, revenue generation, and digital program and content development. The Senior Director will develop execute and adapt a business plan that drives net-income for PBS while taking into account the complexities of the public media ecosystem. The Senior Director will be a high-profile advocate for innovation across the PBS system, facilitating and inspiring myriad stakeholders to explore inventive and groundbreaking approaches to fulfilling the PBS mission through digital content and related business initiatives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Oversee and manage the PBS Digital Studios multi-million dollar annual budget and multiple on-going grants, including financial modeling, forecasting and reporting;
Lead the overall business development strategy including the relationships with key partners and stakeholders, including: PBS member stations, 3rd party distributors, independent production companies, content underwriters, sponsors, investors, and other strategically aligned media organizations;
Oversee content rights acquisition and management, producer and talent deals, and deal flow management working closely with General Counsel to finalize deals and acquisitions;
Lead efforts to maximize opportunities for member stations to leverage the assets, capabilities, knowledge, and resources developed through PBS Digital Studios to increase the stations’ value and connection to their communities and audiences;
Conduct competitive analyses to better inform PBS member stations about the multi-channel network landscape and help strategize ways to keep PBS Digital Studios as a leader in online content;
Expand the PBS Digital Studios content offering to position PBS as the world leader in digital ‘edutainment’ content;
Develop and execute next-generation distribution, marketing and monetization strategies geared toward growing member-based acquisition, retention and profitability;
Serve as the Senior Executive Producer of PBS Digital Studios overseeing publishing operations, with ultimate responsibility for produced content’s adherence to PBS Editorial Standards and web-publishing best practices;
Serve as a key spokesperson for PBS Digital Studios, attending speaking engagements, conferences, interviews and press events to drive media coverage, business development and audience growth;
Manage a small team of dedicated staff with growth potential, providing support, recognition, direction and professional development opportunities.
SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Deep understanding of the online video business landscape;
Diplomatic with excellent judgment and strong negotiation and consensus-building skills;
Ability to deliver on business imperatives by working effectively across the organization and with multiple stakeholders;
A strategic thinker who can develop and implement strategy and tactics;
Ability to develop and implement social media strategies;
A leader in the online publishing field who is well-connected and has an extensive professional network of digital producers and media executives;
Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to make complex concepts easy to understand;
Strong quantitative analysis skills (including Excel-based financial modeling) and the ability to consider and analyze a broad range of factors and to make decisions, design plans, and develop tactics;
Superior leadership and management skills;

Ability to manage multiple complex issues simultaneously;

Understanding of business development practices, including contract negotiations, deal flow management, and partner and talent management;
A thorough understanding and substantive knowledge of challenges affecting Public Broadcasting preferred.
Desired Skills and Experience
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
8+ years professional experience working for media organizations or nationally recognized brand(s) via digital media initiatives (advertising, social media, communications, etc.);
Extensive editorial experience developing video content for the web;
Extensive editorial experience with public media issues;
Track record of establishing and maintaining partnerships;
Experience managing staff and teams;
Experience successfully developing and implementing strategic plans;
Experience in a multi-channel network (e.g. YouTube) environment or similar experience in a new and/or traditional media organization;
Experience in public media or other non-profit or public policy organization with constituent/member services helpful.
MINIMUM EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIRED:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field required;
Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA) preferred.
