Director - Research and Technology - Ingredion Incorporated - Bridgewater


Job description
Primary Function
The Director, Research and Technology will lead Research and Technology development activity of scientists and technicians related to modification of starches and other polysaccharides in support of the Green Solutions and Core Industrial products. The Director will organize the research and evaluation of emerging trends in the sustainable materials field to determine worth to the organization. In addition, the Director will provide support & guidance to other R&D functions, including Plant Science, Process Technology, Open Innovation, Applications, System Design & Measurement, and others.
Reports To: Vice President, Research & Technology
Supervision: One Direct Report, Total team of 6

Key Deliverables
Business
Translates business goals into research objectives, plans, and deliverables.

Defines Research and Technology direction based on clear understanding of Green solutions growth area 4-yr business plan.
Maintains Green Solution’s vision and mission at the forefront of decision making and action.
Identifies new technology platforms relevant to Ingredion’s business.
Leads team in conducting early stage research & product development.
Supports Core Industrial product development as needed.
Coordinates across functional areas, business units, and/or geographies in order to achieve defined strategic goals.

Agility and Innovation
Develops and executes multi-year Green Solutions technology platform plan
Designs and executes operational decisions with a strategic perspective
Manages and builds a robust product pipeline
Partners with cross-functional team leaders to develop and implement breakthrough innovation strategies
Directs and controls the activities and budget of the responsible area
Monitors and ensures compliance with company policies and procedures.
Provides technical guidance to the direct and indirect teams.
Identifies and organizes functional team to attain established objectives.

Relationships and People
Provides general direction to managers, scientists, specialists, technicians and other support in various areas, groups, and operations.
Builds strategic partnerships to further departmental and organizational objectives. Interacts internally and externally with executive level management, outside regulatory agencies, customers, vendors and/or suppliers.
Interacts with commercial functions to facilitate new product development.
Recruits, coaches and develops organizational talent.
Fosters a diverse workplace that enables all participants to contribute to their full potential in pursuit of organizational objectives.

Knowledge, Skills, and Requirements:
Ph.D. degree in Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry or other related technical field with 12+ years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and work experience. Advanced degree preferred.
Expertise in Carbohydrate Chemistry
Deep and fundamental understanding of key chemical conversion processes.
Experience working with products – from idea generation to product launch
Solid knowledge of commercial scale-up and high volume manufacturing processing at the plant level.
Strong analytical chemistry experience
Deep understanding of specific customer opportunities
Experience with technical and industry networking
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Solid communication and interpersonal skills for customer interaction and engagement.
