Director - Public Relations - Union Square Hospitality Group - New York


Job description
Key Responsibilities:
STRATEGY
Collaborate with PR/Marketing team and business leaders to develop annual PR plan
Effectively communicate ongoing messaging and strategy to leaders
Manage all communications to raise awareness and increase mindshare about USHG and its collection of businesses
Strategically leverage Danny Meyer’s brand to highlight USHG and its businesses
Monitor and report on relevant industry trends, events and opportunities to appropriate teams
Collaborate on strategy and execution of USHG social media channels
PITCHING & MEDIA RELATIONS
Manage Danny Meyer’s press opportunities including strategic pitching, evaluation and coordination of journalist visits, photo and filming opportunities and interview requests
Proactively identify and act on consistent and successful execution of public relations including story creation, materials development, media targeting, media pitching, coordination, fulfillment and internal/external communication for lifestyle, food and business publications both online and print
Position USHG talent as resources/experts on various industry topics
Work closely with the business leaders of both HQ and USE and with their marketing teams to identify business goals to best pitch B2B and consumer-facing stories, their leaders, and their connection to USHG as a whole. Execute on press opportunities for both of these USHG businesses.

Lead management of crisis communication and work with partners when necessary
EVENTS
Actively pitch USHG talent participation in events such as NYCWFF, Food & WINE Classic in Aspen, SoBE WFF, Pebble Beach Wine and Food Festival, Google Talks, TEDx, Crains and Times Talks
Play crucial role in planning and execution of large scale company events including Big Apple Barbecue Block Party, Share Our Strength Autumn Harvest Dinner, press conferences, restaurant anniversaries, restaurant events, tastings, and more
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
Develop and execute PR strategy for new businesses to position them in the marketplace and the USHG portfolio with unique brand voice and point of view
Partner with Director of Marketing, operations and business development teams to successfully launch new businesses that build upon the USHG parent brand efforts
Contribute media research to support ongoing business development
Execute and coordinate opening PR for new businesses in collaboration with Director of Marketing and operations team
INTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS & LEADERSHIP
Meet regularly with CRO, Director of Marketing and Associate Director of Internal Communications to identify and understand each business in connection to overall business goals and ensure the uncommon hospitality, excellence and professionalism of the USHG PR & Marketing function
Maintain consistent communication with PR/Marketing managers, chefs and GM’s of businesses to ensure brand voice, messaging, and press/event opportunities are aligned
Partner with the USHG Director of Marketing to create a collaborative and strategic budget process to best support strategic marketing and PR campaigns
Manage the overall awards process (ie. James Beard, Zagat, Forbes, Crain’s) working in collaboration with Senior PR/Marketing Managers
Serve as a resource to PR/Marketing Managers by assisting with story ideas and press introductions
Mentor team members on writing, media relations and pitching
Transmit the Organization’s values, vision and direction
Work collaboratively with other office departments to share knowledge and to create an atmosphere of enthusiasm, transparency and trust
Work closely with Shake Shack PR/Marketing team to ensure messaging is aligned while maintaining individual brand voice as well as to diminish risk
EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS
Build and cultivate relationships with media partners to raise awareness and increase mindshare of USHG businesses and leaders
Foster and/or maintain relationships with key industry organizations and like-minded companies
Identify key audiences for PR outreach
Be a leader in relevant community and professional organizations. Through community involvement, create visibility for USHG as an active member of the community.
Cultivate relationships with organizations and neighbors distinct to each business (i.e. Flatiron BID, Downtown Alliance)
Manage external PR agency relationships as necessary

Desired Skills and Experience
Technical:
At least 10 years PR experience managing both brands and individual talent
Required experience in restaurant/hospitality industry
Excellent high level national media/publicity relations contacts, especially in hospitality / food / restaurant related industry
Mix of agency, publication and in-house experience preferred
Excellent writing and editing skills, including press materials, strategic plans and daily correspondence
Strong interpersonal skills to handle effective communication to wide range of colleagues and business stakeholders
Excellent understanding of social media tools, execution and strategy
Strong ability and desire to mentor and teach more junior team members
Strategic thinking & problem solving
Delegation and project management
Team Oriented
Ability to maintain integrity, both personal and on behalf of represented brands
Strong Computer Skills including Microsoft Office
Education:
Bachelor degree in PR /Marketing or related field from accredited university.
Language:
English
Physical:
Involves sitting, but also involves walking and local commuting to various business units.
Requires schedule flexibility, including work nights and weekends as needed.
Requires some national travel to food festivals, etc.
Must be reachable and connected via email during non-working hours.
