Director - Income Tax - CarMax - Richmond
Job description
The Director is responsible for all income tax matters of the Company and its affiliates and subsidiaries. The Director is responsible for leading, recruiting, supervising, developing and mentoring the income tax compliance and provision teams. In addition, this position is responsible for the planning and implementation of income tax strategies consistent with Company policies, while minimizing tax expense and tax risk. This position leads projects requiring cross-department expertise and provides assistance and advisory services to the senior management and executive leaders of the Company while managing the daily operations of the teams.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Direct, lead, and develop associates through timely performance feedback delivered during day-to-day observations, file reviews and an annual performance review. Responsible for working with associates to create individual development plans and business objectives designed to enhance and assist associate growth.
• Directs the Tax Provision function in accordance with ASC 740 (formerly SFAS109), including ASC 740-10-25 (formerly FIN 48) analysis and disclosures, quarterly and annual tax provision calculations, annual ETR calculation, SEC reporting and disclosures.
• Directs the Income Tax Compliance and Audits function in accordance with all Federal, State and Local laws; monitors and reviews all income tax legislation to assess applicability to the Company.
• Directs the tax fixed asset and depreciation process, including implementation of new legislation and tax accounting or compliance standards related to fixed assets.
• Develops strategic tax planning ideas; provides guidance and support to senior management and other business units.
• Acts as Compliance Administrator to ensure compliance with all Federal, State and Local tax laws in all jurisdictions; responsible for compliance with all income tax related SOX controls.

• Advanced federal and state income tax technical skills, including ASC 740, ASC 718 and other tax related accounting pronouncements
• Strong accounting skills including general knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)

• Demonstrated ability to provide exceptional customer service
• Ability to prioritize and lead team to achieve long-term and short-term results
• Ability to develop, execute, and adjust a plan with high degree of independence

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
• Four year degree in Accounting and/or Finance required; Masters in Taxation preferred
• Ten or more years of Federal and State income tax experience; experience in both public and private accounting sectors is preferred
• Five or more years of experience leading teams, including managing multiple levels of direct and/or indirect reports
• CPA required
• Previous project management experience preferred
• Computer skills: Microsoft Office, OneSource Tax Provision, OneSource RS
