Job description
Avalere Health is seeking a Director or Vice President- level Health Actuary to serve as the actuarial subject matter expert within the firm’s Data Analytics practice. Successful candidates will thrive in a fast-paced environment and have the ability to apply actuarial concepts and formulate solutions to address health policy issues and business needs for a diverse set of clients. He or she should have specific background related to government programs (Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP) and/or fully insured markets (individual, small group, large group), as well as experience working on health policy issues. The Health Actuary will report to the Senior Vice President of Data Analytics.

The ideal candidate will have a record of inventive problem solving. The candidate must be able to apply actuarial concepts and methods to a range of complex health policy and business issues, formulate creative and reuseable strategies, multi-task, translate work products into meaningful guidance for clients, develop and deliver presentations, and write effectively. The candidate must be capable of managing client relationships and leading and mentoring junior staff in a team-oriented environment.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Conceptualizing the scope of projects for clients, assembling a cross-functional team, and overseeing the team from project initiation through completion of client deliverables
Designing and conducting actuarial analyses that quantify the impact of policy and/or market changes
Both participating in and leading project teams in the production of deliverables for a diverse set of clients
Formulating creative and flexible actuarial models and tools for reuse with a diverse set of clients
Providing strategic insight into the application of actuarial concepts and methods to expand opportunities with existing and new clients

Desired Skills and Experience
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in mathematics, actuarial science, statistics, economics, computer science, or an equivalent related field
Preferably 8 to 10+ years of work experience
ASA or FSA designation preferred

Skills and Competencies:
Superior customer service in the form of first-rate work product and project management
Superior fluency in articulating Avalere's value proposition, competencies, and major content areas
Strong ability to lead and mentor junior staff in a matrixed environment
Strong ability to manage challenging client situations
Strong ability to translate complex information to a wide range of clients
Expert knowledge of actuarial concepts and methods and their application to a variety of health policy and health care business issues
Strong strategy development and execution of new business areas

Other Job Related Requirements:
Demonstrated experience advising executive level stakeholders in health insurer, provider, government, or similar environments
Must be able to work both independently and collaboratively
Strong communication and presentation skills
Proficiency in statistical software, Excel, and/or other software languages
Experience with risk adjustment, benefit design and pricing, competitive market analysis, and pharmaceutical analysis preferred
This position may be located in the Washington, D.C. area or remote for the right candidate
