Safety Director - Todd & Sargent - Des Moines

Position Summary:
The Safety Director manages the Todd & Sargent safety program and coordinates all safety activities of construction projects to ensure a safe working environment for all employees, as well as compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, and project owner requirements. This role partners with Superintendents, Project Management, the Executive Leadership Team, and Safety Committee to set and achieve overall safety strategy and goals. This role is instrumental in driving a safety culture through all levels of the Company.

Key Responsibilities:
Direct, communicate, and enforce the Company’s safety strategy, vision, and culture.
Develop, implement, and execute a comprehensive, effective safety program for the Company and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations (including OSHA) and jobsite owner requirements.
Develop and maintain Company safety work rules, manuals, policies and procedures. Ensure communication and compliance of such materials.
Establish comprehensive jobsite inspection procedures, perform periodic jobsite inspections and guide other safety personnel in performing inspections. Correct unsafe acts and conditions.
Chair the Safety Committee and be responsible for the planning, coordination, and execution of Safety Committee Meetings to establish the Company’s safety strategy, vision, and culture.
Responsible for all relevant safety communication to the field.
Institute any corrective measures that are necessary for compliance.
Responsible for identifying, coordinating, and overseeing all safety specific training needs.
Direct safety incentive program(s), recommend changes as needed, and monitor results.
Oversee maintenance of a database of employees' status regarding safety specific Company or job training.
Analyze job functions, procedures, equipment and materials to discover potential exposure to injury or illness. Recommend proper equipment, materials, and techniques for prevention.
Responsible for the distribution, coordination, and tracking of all safety related paperwork.
Responsible for collecting, investigating, and communicating all accident reports.
Maintain safety metrics, analyze trends, and communicate on a frequent and regular basis to the field, executive team, and safety committee.
Keep up-to-date on current federal, state, and local legislation and regulation changes; maintain knowledge of current and emerging issues and trends in area of specialty.
Promote positive relations with OSHA personnel, maintain a history of citations received and final decisions, interpret OSHA regulations as they pertain to our industry/business.
Direct the work of safety personnel, set and monitor goals and objectives.

Desired Skills and Experience
Qualifications:
8+ years of experience managing the safety efforts of construction jobsites, preferably in the industrial construction or agricultural construction industries.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Degree in construction management, occupational safety and health, or other closely related discipline preferred.
Completion of OSHA Course #500 (Train the Trainer) and OSHA 10 & 30 hour Construction Industry training required.
Certified Safety Professional (CSP) a plus.
Experience with a self-performing contractor a plus.
Knowledge of theories, principles, and practices of construction, safety, and risk management.
Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations governing construction safety.
Knowledge of OSHA and Canadian OH&S for the construction industry and other applicable regulations relating to employee safety and accident prevention.
Ability to set strategies to achieve goals; compile, analyze, and interpret complex data; prepare comprehensive reports and correspondence.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; and make, support, and explain recommendations and decisions.
Ability to work with and interact professionally with all construction groups including owners, Company supervision, skilled trade workers and laborers, and subcontractors.
Strong computer skills including use of Microsoft Office applications.
Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus, but not required.
Jobsite travel within the U.S. and Canada up to 60%. Valid driver’s license and passport required.
